International Box Office: Cinderella Swaps Spots with Insurgent
April 2, 2015
Cinderella returned to first place after a week in second. It did so with $40.0 million in 53 markets for totals of $187.7 million internationally and $337.3 million worldwide. The film opened in a number of major markets, including the U.K., where it earned first place with $5.65 million in 554 theaters. The film took $3.8 million in France and $3.7 million in Australia, while Brazil was close behind with $3.4 million. The film's debut in Spain wasn't as strong at $2.1 million, but that was still the best result of the weekend and the third best opening of the year. Meanwhile in China, the film added $12.33 million over the full week for a total of $65.92 million after three. At this pace, the film will have no trouble getting to $400 million worldwide, which will be enough to cover its entire production budget and perhaps all of its P&A budget.
Insurgent slipped to second place with $29.9 million in 81 markets for totals of $93.7 million internationally and $179.6 million worldwide. The film's only major market opening came in South Korea, where the film opened in fourth place with $1.07 million on 479 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.48 million. At this pace, it will pass Divergent's international total in about two weeks. On the other hand, it is $100 million behind Divergent's worldwide box office number and it might be asking too much of the film to last that long.
Kingsman: The Secret Service rose to third place with $27.9 million in 52 markets for totals of $211.7 million internationally and $331.0 million worldwide. This includes a first place, $24.25 million opening in China. Any doubt about a sequel should probably be over now.
Home slipped a spot to fourth, but it was still strong with $25.5 million on 11,671 screens in 64 markets for a two week total of $49.6 million. The film's biggest new market was Mexico, where it opened in first place with $3.1 million on 2,136 screens. It fell 57% during its second weekend in the U.K. with $3.86 million in 546 theaters over the weekend for a total of $13.82 million after two weeks of release. That's a sharp decline, but there were two new family films that opened in the U.K. this past weekend, so the competition was stiff.
Focus was well back in fifth place with $8.7 million in 64 markets for a month-long total of $82.5 million. The film's biggest opening came in France, where it earned third place with $2 million on 347 screens. On the other hand, it earned second place in Spain with $1.4 million on 317 screens. If it can get to $100 million internationally, the studio should be happy with its run.
Twenty opened in first place in South Korea and sixth place internationally with $6.17 million on 925 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $8.00 million.
Taken 3 was right behind with $6.1 million in 3 markets over the weekend for a total of $238.4 million internationally and $327.4 million worldwide. Internationally, the film is the biggest hit in the franchise and it is certainly profitable.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water returned to the chart in eighth place with $5.4 million in 44 markets for totals of $127.7 million internationally and $287.9 million worldwide. The film opened in third place in the U.K. with $3.36 million in 483 theaters. That's a weaker opening than the film had here, but there were three family films in the top three spots in that market this past weekend. That's extreme competition for a single demographic.
Lost and Love added $5.2 million over the weekend to its running tally, which now sits at $31.70 million after two weeks of release.
Get Hard rounded out the top ten with $4.9 million in 9 markets during its opening weekend. It earned fourth place in the U.K. with $2.13 million in 330 theaters. This is weaker than its opening here, but comedy often doesn't translate into other cultures very well.
Big Hero 6 fell out of the top ten this past weekend, but it did become the second biggest animated hit in China with $83.53 million. It has a chance at overtaking the number one film, Kung Fu Panda 2, which finished with $92.17 million in that market.
