DVD Sales: Eight is Enough for DVD
March 8, 2015
Every single film in the top five of the DVD sales chart were new releases, as were eight of the top ten films. Game of Thrones: Season Four earned first place with 241,000 units / $7.23 million during its first week of release. It is hard to be upset about that start.
Dumb and Dumber To was right behind with 240,000 units / $4.07 million. This isn't bad, all things considered. Many feared the film would be a complete disaster, but while its reviews were less than optimal, it has become a box office success. The Interview opened in third place with 206,000 units / $2.06 million. It is really hard to judge this film's home market debut, because its theatrical run was such a mess. St. Vincent was a little ways back with an opening week run of 119,000 units / $1.92 million. The film was only a limited release, so this is a fast start. Birdman rounded out the top five with 87,000 units / $1.30 million. It did better on Blu-ray, but the Best Picture Oscar Winner should sell more than this.
The next new release was The Homesman, which opened in seventh place with 62,000 units / $807,000. It was a limited release, so this is a great start. The Theory of Everything only managed eighth place with 56,000 units / $958,000. This is a slow start for a film that was a major Awards Season player. The final new release to chart was Dying of the Light. This film landed in tenth place with 53,000 units / $636,000.
