Akira director, Katsuhiro Ôtomo makes his return with Steam Boy
January 8, 2003
It’s been nearly 15 years since the groundbreaking anime film Akira was released in Japan, and now Katsuhiro Ôtomo is set to direct his first full-length anime since 1988. Steam Boy, which is set in Victorian England, is reported to be the most expensive Japanimation film ever, with a budget of nearly 2.5 billion yen, ($20 million.) Production, which initially began in 1995, should wrap up soon and Toho Films hopes to release it during the fall of 2003 in Japan. Worldwide release should follow shortly after.
While best known for directing Akira, Katsuhiro Ôtomo has also directed the live action World Apartment Horror and written many manga graphic novels and the screenplay to Metropolis.
