Charlie Tops $200 Million
September 28, 2005
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory finished first on the international charts for the third weekend in a row and the fifth time in its international run, reaching a major milestone along the way.
Over the weekend the film added $13.7 million on almost 4,000 screens in 55 markets for an international box office of $201.1 million.
Highlights include amazing holdovers in Japan where it was down just 12% to $4.1 million over the weekend and $22 million in total and in South Korea where the film was down a phenomenal 6% to $1.5 million for a $5 million total.
New openings include first place debuts in both Italy at $2.8 million on 402 screens and $333,000 on 64 screens in Denmark, which represents its last two major or midlevel markets.
Cinderella Man earned a second place finish with $6.2 million for an early international total of $27 million.
The film opened in second place in Belgium with $255,000. Holdovers were average, at best, with the film down nearly 40% in Italy with $525,000, 40% in Spain with $435,000, and in the U.K. down 38% with $465,000.
These results are not terrible, but the film was expensive to make and it is constantly failing to meet expectations. On a more positive note, the film opened in limited release in Australia earning $80,000 on 8 screens and opens wide next weekend.
Bewitched is doing better than expected, adding another $4 million to its $51 million international total.
Most of that came from its opening in France where it topped the market with $2.4 million on 491 screens.
The film is yet to open in Italy and other smaller markets and should top its domestic run before it's finished.
Pride and Prejudice was down just 24% during its second weekend in the U.K. and was still number one by a mile with $3.41 million on 402 screens for a running tally of $11.6 million in that market.
It also opened in Holland in third place with $275,000 on 50 screens, about average for these types of films.
Fantastic Four may have plummeted by 55% in Italy but it still earned $1.84 million on 473 screens.
It also earned $1.3 million on 450 screens Japan, and with additional markets pulling in a few hundred thousand more the film was able to add $3.4 million to its international total, taking it to $164.8 million.
