Marching to Victory
June 28, 2005
March of the Penguins got off to an astounding start over the weekend earning $137,492 in just 4 theatres for a very impressive $34,373 per theatre average. Coming is second was Me You and Everyone We Know with $15,413 in 5 theatres, while debuting during the opening of the IFC Center obviously helped, this performance shows that the films itself earned much of its success so far.
This past week also saw some milestones reached for several Per Theatre Charts alumnus:
- On Friday I was worried that opening in 'select cities' would hurt Rize's chances. Well, it looks like I was wrong as the film opened with more than $1.5 million. Even if it has normal week-to-week drop-offs for a wide release, it should become one of the biggest documentaries of the year.
- Howl's Moving Castle reached $2 million early in the weekend, but won't live up to Hayao Miyazaki's previous film.
- Mad Hot Ballroom continues to grow at the box office earning more than $500,000 this weekend alone. That was just enough to push the film to $3 million over the weekend. Even if the film has reached its peak at the box office, it should continue to hit milestones and is already a success.
- Ladies in Lavender hit $3 million early in the midweek and it's not done by a long shot.
