Aviator Shoots Down Competition

June 11, 2005

It was a slow week for new releases and what little competition there was couldn't stop The Aviator from holding onto top spot on the Home Rental Charts. Its combined total of $7.76 million was a sharp drop-off from last week, but even so the film is doing well enough on the home market that is will soon show modest profit.

Are We There Yet? also saw its combined rental figures drop quite a bit to $7.48 million, but that was enough to stay in second place. The first, and only new film in the top five was Boogeyman; the film was a bit of a surprise hit when in played in theatres earlier in the year and now it debuted on the home market with $6.72 million in rentals. National Treasure fell to fourth with $5.61 while White Noise rounded out the top five with $4.86.

As I already stated, it was a slow week with only one new release in the Top Twenty. Even so, the total rental market was down only slightly from last week, dipping just 1.25% to $148.9 million. Compared to the same weekend last year the news wasn't so good with a 6.6% drop, which meant at $3.4 billion the total rental market continued to lose ground to 2004 and is now behind by 1.4%.

There was little change on the sales charts as Chappelle Show Season 2 remained in first place. Boogeyman was again the only new DVD on the charts coming in second place. The rest of the top five went to The Aviator, Team America: World Police and Are We There Yet?

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith may have lost its grip on the box office, but it is still having a huge effect on sales. The Original Trilogy, The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones all managed to place in the top ten, (seventh, ninth and tenth places respectively.) The last week we have actual sales figures for showed the three sets selling nearly 400,000 units combined, which is more than $10 million in sales.

There wasn't much change on the TV on DVD charts with only one new film reaching the top five. Leading the wasy was The Chappelle Show Season 2 with Seinfeld - The Complete Fourth Season just ahead of The Chappelle Show Season 1. Fourth place went to Scrubs The Complete First Season while Moonlighting - Season 1 & Two rounded out the top five.

As you may recall, last week there was some confusion with regard to the fifth place finisher on the DVD on TV sales charts. Turns out there was more confusion than originally thought. The top four were the same as this week with NewsRadio Seasons 1 & 2 grabbing fifth place. And Clone Wars - Volume 1, which I had in fourth place actually finished ninth. On a side note, I mentioned how well Firefly The Complete Series was selling on Amazon, but I figured that was just an anomaly, however, the set has actually moved up this charts this week and it currently in 19th place overall.
