Tie at the Top of Per Theater Chart
March 22, 2005
There was a tie this weekend atop the Per Theater Chart between Melinda and Melinda, both of which were directed by the team of Woody and Allen. Melinda and Melinda earned an amazing $74,238 in its lone theater, which is the best per theater average ever for a Fox Searchlight film over a three-day weekend.
Second place went to Best of Youth, which again climbed on the charts to $17,756, up nearly 72% this week.
Next we have last week's winner, The Upside of Anger, which held up very well despite a huge increase in theater count.
When the film expanded into 153 theaters over the weekend, I felt the best it could hope for was maintaining a $10,000 average, and even that was a long shot.
However, not only did the film hit $10,000 per theater, it beat it by more than 21%, earning $12,113, finishing 11th on the overall chart and topping $2 million so far.
Also holding up well despite the pressure from an increased theater count was Millions, which made more than $200,000 in just 19 theaters, for an average of $10,641.
Rounding out the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, The Ring 2 with $10,524.
This past week also saw some milestones reached for several Per Theater Charts alumnus:
