Saw Remains on Top of Belated Rental Charts

Note: It took me all of one week before I forgot to include the Home Market numbers. I'm going to blame the excitement of the Oscars for me totally spacing on the rental numbers.

Thanks in part to a slow week for DVD releases, Saw remained the top DVD rental on this weeks charts with $6.80 million this week, a drop of 28% from last week, and a two week total of $16.27 million so far. On the VHS side, the film dropped first to third with $1.09 million, down 38% for a total of $2.83 million.

On the other hand, Taxi held up much better and that allowed it to take over top spot on the VHS charts with $1.14 million for the week and $2.71 million during its run. The film also held well on the DVD charts remaining in second place with $5.91 million for a two-week total of $13.50 million. Rounding out the top five were The Notebook with $5.9 million in combined rentals, Ray with $4.9 million and Shark Tale with $4.1 million.

The only new release to hit the top ten on either chart was I ♥ Huckabees, which finished 8th on the DVD chart with $2.57 million and 7th on the VHS chart with $440,000. That puts the film nearly a quarter of the way to matching its $12.8 million domestic box office.

On the sales side, those film films held onto the top five positions as well, just in a slightly different order: Shark Tale, Saw, The Notebook, Taxi and Ray. The rest of the top ten were Shall We Dance? and Raise Your Voice at six and seven respectively. Followed by the Direct-to-DVD sequel, Mulan II and the limited releases Napoleon Dynamite and Motorcycle Diaries.

Two notes with the sales figures, firstly they take into account both the Widescreen and Pan & Scan versions is different versions exists and secondly, due to the nature of collecting such data, the figures are one week behind the rental numbers.
