International Top Five - Prada Still a Powerhouse
October 18, 2006
The Devil Wears Prada remained on top of the international charts as it added $24.61 million on 4217 screens in 42 markets. This lifted its international total to $75.43 million and its worldwide total to $199.75 million. Germany was the film's biggest market as it took in $4.24 million on 559 screens, but a local film kept it out of first place while another local film did the same in the Netherlands where it opened with $631,000 on 80 screens over the weekend and $816,000 in total. It did earn first place in Italy with $3.56 million on 417 screens and in Taiwan with an estimated $1.2 million on 98. Meanwhile, the film performed amazingly in several holdover markets adding $3.47 million on 446 screens in the U.K. to its two-week total of $12.53 million while it remained in first place in France with $1.9 million on 507 screens for $10.1 million after three weeks. As for further milestones, the film has obviously already crossed $200 million worldwide and $100 million internationally won't be far behind.
It appears that World Trade Center has peaked at the box office but it still managed $10.45 million on 3,597 screens in 42 markets for a total of $58.24 million after a month on the international scene.
Among its openings this week was Italy where it had to settle for second place with $1.98 million on 325 screens over the weekend, while it managed third in South Korea with $1.1 million at 140.
While openings have been good, the film has really struggled during subsequent sessions; for example, it fell 39% in Japan, which is very high for the market.
On the other hand, it was able to remain in first place there with $2.02 million on 350 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $8.95 million.
An Australia debut propelled The Departed into the top five with $7.35 million on 1,073 screens in 13 markets for a still early international total of $17.15 million.
In Australia, the film placed first with $1.87 million on 276 screens while it also did well in a number of smaller openings.
Even more impressive was its sophomore stint in the U.K. where it rose to first place thanks to its mere 15% drop-off.
Over the weekend the film added $3.63 million on 364 screens for a two-week total of $10.46 million in that market.
Open Season doubled its international total this weekend, earning $6.93 million on 2,150 screens in 18 markets for a total of $13.65 million.
Its biggest opening came in the U.K. where it made $3.09 million on 445 screens but that was only good enough for third place.
On the other hand, it did finish in top spot in Mexico, but its $2.21 million on 606 screens (including previews) was weak given the historical norms for family films in that market.
It performed up to expectations in Poland taking in $713,000 on 100 screens over the weekend and $831,000 in total.
Click fell to fifth with $5.58 million on 2,772 screens in 48 markets for an international total of $81.87 million.
This was more than enough for the film to become Adam Sandler's biggest international hit, topping 50 First Dates.
However, with no major openings left, it is unlikely that it will hit any more milestones at the international box office.
