Poseidon Capsizes Competition on Home Market
September 2, 2006
It was a relatively slow week for new releases, but without much competition there were two newcomers finishing atop the standings. In first place was Poseidon as the disaster flick hopes to save its run on the home market; the $8.97 million it was able to bring in put it in first place comfortably, but it won't be enough to help it show a profit any time soon.
Next up is Silent Hill with $6.98 million, or just over 15% of its final domestic total. This is not a great start, but at least the film performed better on the sales chart. Just a fraction behind was R.V. with $6.96 million for the week and $16.16 million after two. Inside Man continues to show strong legs adding $5.30 million to its three-week total of $22.04 million. Rounding out the top five was Scary Movie 4, which fell 45% to $4.68 million. That was the worst week-to-week drop-off on the charts and the film's total of $13.24 million is low compared to its domestic total of just over $90 million.
There were only two other new releases to chart this week including Just My Luck in sixth place with $4.39 million and Phat Girlz in 11th place with $1.92 million.
It was another week of growth with the total rentals reaching $143.8 million. That's 0.6% higher than last week and 7.8% higher than the same weekend last year. This helped push 2006's lead over 2005 to 1.8% with a total of $5.2 billion in rentals thus far.
Silent Hill was able to take top spot on the sales charts which is one of the benefits of the Fanboy Effect, lower rentals are offset by higher, and more profitable sales. Next up was Poseidon, which shows that the while many were willing to give the underperforming disaster flick a second chance on the small screen, they weren't willing to shell out the cash to purchase it. R.V. captured third place just ahead of Scary Movie 4 while Just My Luck managed to place fifth.
Two of the three other new releases to chart this week were TV on DVD including seventh place House, M.D. - The Complete Second Season. Phat Girlz grabbed ninth place while Veronica Mars - The Complete Second Season managed 12th place.
House, M.D. - The Complete Second Season led the TV on DVD sales chart, which is no surprise given its placing on the overall sales chart, while Veronica Mars - The Complete Second Season opened in second place. High School Musical rose to third place on the DVD sales chart and remained in 16th overall during its 12th week of release. Next up is Rome - The Complete First Season while Chappelle's Show - The Lost Episodes climbed into fifth place.
The only other new release to chart was Invasion - The Complete Series, which just managed to grab 10th place.
