Narnia Overthrows King for Home Market Crown

April 15, 2006

Narnia opened in first place on the home market with a lower than expected $8.73 million in rentals, and it did even better on the sales charts. But more on that in a bit. Second place went to King Kong as it dropped just 24% to $7.81 million for the week and $18.32 million in total. A pair of Oscar winners came in third and fourth with Brokeback Mountain leading Memoirs of a Geisha $5.95 million to $4.20 million. The only film in the top five without and Oscar win was Derailed with $4.06 million during its third week of release and $18.38 million in total.

There were only two other new releases to chart this week including Dirty, which came in 21st place with $1.25 million. The other film was Bee Season with $790,000 for a 29th place debut.

We again saw a decline in the overall market as it fell 4.4% to $149.3 million; however, that was up 10.0% from the same week last year. Year-to-date 2006 is still behind with $2.3 billion, but the deficit is down to just 1.2%. If the rental market can maintain this momentum, then it will completely catch up by the end of the month.

As expected, Narnia led the way in DVD sales selling roughly 4 million units during its first day of releases, (sales figures for the whole week were not released). Brokeback Mountain finished in second place selling 1.4 million units during its first day of release, and again, figures for the whole week were not published. King Kong fell to third place while Chicken Little and Memoirs of a Geisha remained in the top five.

There were no only two new releases to chart this week led by Crash - 2-Disc Director's Cut Edition in 17th place. Strangely, the Regular Edition jumped from 13th place to 6th place leading me to believe that a lot of people went in to the stores meaning to buy the Director's Cut but picked up the wrong DVD. The final new release on this week's chart was Tripping the Rift - Season Two as it reached 18th place.

There were three new releases in the top five on the TV on DVD sales chart including the aforementioned Tripping the Rift - Season Two in first place. This pushed South Park - The Complete Seventh Season to second and Robot Chicken - Volume 1 into third. Two newcomers were next with Full House - The Complete Third Season debuting in fourth while Dawson's Creek - The Complete Sixth Season came in fifth.

The only other new release to chart this week was Magnum P.I. - The Complete Fourth Season as it opened in seventh place.
