Saw Seen at Home

February 25, 2006

Saw II dominated the home market easily winning the race for the top of the rental charts while topping the sales charts as well. Rental wise the film brought in $9.96 million in combined rentals, which was $4 million above its nearest competitor. That competitor was Just Like Heaven, which fell just 19% to $5.96 million for the weekend and $13.46 million in total. Flightplan held up even better down just 12% to $5.80 million for the week and $30.44 million during its four-week run. Next up is Doom, which had the worst week-to-week drop-off in the top five down 25% to $5.05 million for the week and $11.89 in total. Elizabethtown slipped to fifth place with $4.52 million for a two-week total of $10.26 million.

Just missing the top five was Zathura with $4.36 million, but it performed much better on the DVD sales chart. The only other new releases to chart this week was Proof at 13th place with $2.49 million.

Overall total rentals hit $178.9 million, up 4.7% from last week but down 4.3% from the same week last year. Year-to-date 2006 has brought in $1.1 billion in total rentals and now sits 8.3% behind last year's pace.

The sales charts were widely different than the rental charts this week, but Saw II topped it as well. Second place went to Zathura, but it is common for family films to perform better on the sales chart than on the rental charts. Case in point, Bambi 2 finished in third place. Grey's Anatomy - Season 1 debuted in fourth place, which is very high for a TV on DVD release, while Doom fell from first to fifth.

The only other new release to chart was Proof as it opened in ninth place.

It was crazy busy on the TV on DVD sales charts with four new releases, three of which finished in the top five. Leading the way was Grey's Anatomy - Season 1 with fellow newcomer Golden Girls - The Complete Fourth Season coming in second. Two long time residents of the charts, Lost - The Complete First Season and Family Guy - Volume 3, finished in third and fourth place respectively. Rounding out the top five was The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - The Complete Third Season while Celebrity Roast of Pamela Anderson Uncensored! just missed the top five coming in sixth place.

This does mean that Firefly - The Complete Series was knocked out of the top ten, but it was released more than 2 years ago so it has had an amazing run. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if it bounced back on the charts in the future.

As for the TV on DVD rental charts, there were no numbers released this week as of now. But I'll try and get both sets of numbers for next week's column.
