International Round-up: Dick and Jane's Fun has Just Begun
January 22, 2006
A few more markets helped Fun with Dick and Jane remain flat last weekend at the international box office with $5.25 million on 1,458 screens in 18 markets for an early total of $18.09 million.
Its best market was Mexico where it opened in first place with $1.87 million on 418 screens while in Germany the film added $1.47 million on 478 screens for a two-week total of $4.39 million.
The film's biggest running total still came from Australia, where the film has managed $7.39 million after three weeks, including $710,000 over this past weekend.
Here is a round-up of other international performances last weekend:
- The Japanese film, The Wow-Choten Hotel, opened in first place in Japan with $4.92 million on just 279 screens over the weekend.
- Match Point took top spot in Italy with $2.26 million on 318 screens during its debut this weekend. Add in holdovers in the U.K. ($775,000 on 152 screens for a $2.67 million), Germany ($739,000 on 177 screens for a $3.60 million), and other smaller markets and the film added $4.46 million on 867 screens in 7 markets for an international total of $30.17 million so far.
- Memoirs Of A Geisha added $4.44 million on 879 screens in 12 markets to its $21.29 million international total. Its biggest market was the U.K. despite the fact that it could only manage a sixth place finish with $2.03 million; however, it was playing on only 241 screens. It earned better placings in three smaller Asian markets including Taiwan ($670,000 from 90 screens); Hong Kong ($300,000 from 21 screens); and Indonesia ($175,000 from 20).
- Day Watch, the sequel to the Russian film, Night Watch, remained in first place in Russia with $3.37 million on 518 screens and adding in smaller, former Soviet Union republics and the film made $4.16 million over the weekend and $24.21 million in total.
- Rumor Has It had a disappointing start in France, taking $766,000 on 302 screens and finishing in sixth place.
On the other hand, the film debuted in second place in the Netherlands with $264,000 on just 65 screens for the second best per screen average in the top twenty. Add in holdovers like Australia ($1.14 million on 238 screens for a $3.72 million total) and the film managed $4.13 million on 1475 screens in 12 markets for a $19.44 million total.
- Cheaper By The Dozen 2 opened in Iceland taking in more than 1 million Krona, or just over $16,000 American, which was enough for fourth and the market.
That was one of only three new markets for the film this week and that explains why is continues to slip down the charts. Over the weekend it added $3.57 million on 1688 screens in 13 markets to its international total of $29.47 million, it also crossed the $100 million mark worldwide. Its best market was again the U.K. where it managed $1.04 million on 335 screens for a three week total of $8.73 million while in Australia the film has made $5.41 million after four weeks, including $481,000 on 214 screen this past weekend.
- No new openings left Chicken Little plummeting down the charts this week falling more than 40% to $3.46 million on 2180 screens in 34 markets for a $115.39 million total so far. That's an excellent total, especially since it has yet to open in Germany and the U.K..
- The Family Stone climbed into first place during its sophomore stint in Spain with $1.06 million on 251 screens for a total of $2.97 million so far. Only Germany at $3.50 million has added more to its international total, a total that reached $23.14 million including the $3.35 million in earned this weekend on 1399 screens in 30 markets.
- Saw II is slipped down the charts falling to 15th with $3.07 million on 955 screens in 12 markets for an international total of $31.872 million. It slipped down the charts despite opening in several midlevel and smaller markets like Russia, ($361,000 on 165 screens), Mexico, ($269,000 on 153 screens), and Norway, ($94,000 on 20 screens).
- Running Wild opened in second place in South Kore with $2.94 million on 389 screens over the weekend and $3.64 million in total.
- The French film, Je Vous Trouve Tres Beau, opened in second place in its native market with $2.77 million on 306 screens.
- Just Like Heaven added $2.69 million on 1462 screens in 31 markets over the weekend for a $45.31 million running tally. Its best opening of the weekend was in New Zealand where the film placed third with $136,000 on 46 screens while best market was the U.K. at $1.10 million on 294 screens for a total of $8.03 million so far.
- Brokeback Mountain saw its weekly take grow by 29% to $2.33 million on 286 screens in 3 markets for a very early international total of $5.35 million. Most of that came from its second weekend in the U.K. where it more than doubled its screen count to 275 and that helped the film remain in fourth place with $2.27 million over the weekend and $5.03 million in total. The other two markets were Iceland, where the film debuted in sixth place with $14,000 on 2 screens and Denmark with $46,000 over the weekend and $290,000 in total.
- Hababam Sinifi 3.5 held up very well this week earning $2.29 million on 357 screens in four markets over the weekend and $7.35 million in total. Most of that came from its home market of Turkey, ($1.88 million on 280 screens and $6.07 million in total), but the film is also doing reasonably well in Germany, ($339,000 on 64 screens over the weekend and $1.13 million in total). At the moment, the top four films in Turkey are all local productions.
- Just Friends held up much better than expected in the U.K. remaining in third place with $2.27 million on 355 screens over the weekend and $6.52 million in total. This is only the second international market the film has opened in, the other being Iceland, where the film has made $83,000 including $6000 this weekend.
- The Constant Gardener opened in sixth place in Germany with $805,000 on just 151 screens and that helped boost its weekend haul to $2.02 million on 662 screens in 16 markets for an international total of $32.28 million.
- Pride & Prejudice jumped back onto the charts with $2.01 million on 551 screens in 14 markets for a $46.81 million total. The film had a quartet of new releases, but it seems like the larger the market the weaker its opening was. In Norway it earned $272,000 on 41 screens while in Poland it made $232,000 on 45 screens; in both markets the film finished in second place. On the other hand, it had to settle for fifth in Russia with $298,000 on 115 screens and eighth in Japan with $570,000 on 200 screens.
- Without any new openings, Lord of War quickly fell down the charts dropping to $2.01 million on 483 screens in 9 markets for a total of $23.33 million so far. Most of the weekend box office came from France where it added $1.71 million on 332 screens for a two-week total of $5.14 million,
- Yamato is still holding up amazingly well in Japan adding $1.99 million on 301 screens to its $27.36 million total after five weeks there.
- The 40-Year Old Virgin popped back onto the charts this weekend thanks to a second place, $1.78 million opening on 196 screens in Italy. Add in a handful of holdovers and the film made $1.88 million on 219 screens in 10 markets for a $62.49 million international total. Had the film made that much worldwide, the studio would have been happy and the film would have easily made a profit by its initial push into the home market.
- The South Korean film, Art Of Fighting, slipped to third place in its native market, but it was still able to add $1.65 million on 260 screens to its $6.31 million, two-week total.
- Get Rich Or Die Tryin' started its international run in Germany, which is probably the only international market that it will do well in. There is managed a second place finish with $1.44 million on 280 screens.
- The New World made its international debut with a third place, $1.37 million opening on 351 screens over the weekend, which is a much better start than it had here after taking into account the relative size of the two markets.
- Nanny McPhee scored a second place finish during its opening weekend in Australia earning $1.32 million on 223 from Friday to Sunday and $1.40 million including Thursday.
- Ti Amo In Tutte Le Lingue Del Mondo fell from first to fourth in Italy with $1.30 million on 297 screens over the weekend and $22.48 million in total.
- The Producers opened in Australia but could do no better than fifth place with $1.01 million on 194 screens; on the other hand, the film fell out of the top ten in the U.K. plummeting 67% to $238,000 on 190 screens for a three-week total of $4.81 million. Given how poorly this film and Rent have done, I think any musicals that are in the works may be put on hold for a while.
- Crash opened in second place in Spain with $1.03 million on 176 screens. That's one of the film's better openings during its international run, a run that has brought in close to $30 million so far.
- The Brazilian film, Fe Eu Fosse Voce, remained in top spot in its native market with $1 million over the weekend and $3.6 million in total.
- Zathura added another $1 million to its $11.2 million international total. This weekend in opened in fifth place in Brazil with $220,000 on 150 screens but had to settle for eighth in New Zealand on $84,000 on 58. On the other hand, the film added another $411,000 on 320 screens in Mexico for a four-week total of $3.68 million.
- The Fog opened in its first major market on the international scene but could only manage an eleventh place finish in Germany with $601,000 on 181 screens over the weekend, which lifted its international total to $3 million so far.
- Cry_Wolf opened in the U.K. with $347,000 on 144 screens, which lifts its international total to $3 million so far. The film has likely already shown a profit, so anything it earns now is just a bonus.
