DVD Releases for November 13, 2007

November 12, 2007

Another week, another $300 million hit comes out on DVD, along with a few dozen other films and TV series. While this week wasn't quite as busy as it has been for a few weeks, we still had plenty of contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. This includes this week's winner, Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition - Blu-Ray, while a release from last week, Ratatouille - Blu-Ray, earns a belated honor.

The Addams Family - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon
The first complete series on this week's list. This one is not that much cheaper than buying the three individual volumes.

Amazing Grace - Buy from Amazon
The film stars Ioan Gruffudd as William Wilberforce, an anti-slavery crusader in the 1800s who helped abolish slavery in Britain. The film earned good reviews and beat expectations at the box office, eventually topping $20 million despite never playing in significantly more than 1,000 theaters. The extras are strong for a smaller film (it's not quite a limited release, but it certainly wasn't a very wide release either), and include an audio commentary track, behind-the-scenes featurette, educational materials, etc. Worth checking out, and worth picking up over just renting.

Black Books - The Complete 3rd Series - Buy from Amazon
The third and final series of this funny British show, which is about misanthropic book store owner who hates his customers above all else. Like most imports, the price is high on a per minute basis, but at least there are most extras than most, (deleted scenes, outtakes, etc.). Worth checking out for most, picking up for many. Also coming out tomorrow is the Complete Series box set, which is equally worth picking up.

Blu-Ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Africa: The Serengeti, Alaska: Spirit of the Wild, Antarctica: An Adventure of a Different Nature, Australia: Land Before Time, Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition, Master of Horror - Season 1 - Volume 3, Ocean's Thirteen, Ocean's Trilogy , Prison Break - Season 1, and Ultimate Force
While Blu-Ray has more releases this week, HD-DVD has the bigger sellers. On the other hand, the two releases that are coming out in both formats are selling better on Blu-Ray than on HD-DVD.

Captain N and the New Super Mario World - Buy from Amazon
This show was basically 22 minutes of commercials for Nintendo with the flimsiest of plots to hold it together. Fans of old school consoles, (third and fourth generation), could get a hit of nostalgia from the show, but most will be shocked with the quality level as it has not aged well. Additionally, the extras are negligible leaving the 2-disc set as a rental, at the most.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-Ray
One of the greatest movies ever made is being re-re-released on DVD, which isn't really worth a sniff. Okay, that's a little harsh as it is a great 3-disc set, but the Blu-Ray edition is easily worth snapping up. It has all three versions of the movie on the first disc with special branching depending on the version you select, as well as lots of extras. (On a side note, I hope other studios use this technology in other releases. I would love to be able to select which deleted scenes I want back in the movie and which ones I thought were good cuts. It shouldn't be too hard to do on Blu-Ray.) The extras include a solid mix of new and old running nearly 3 hours making this version a contender for DVD Pick of the Week.

The Colbert Report - The Best Of - Buy from Amazon
Attention pundits, politicians, and beltway media literati, Stephen Colbert is not one of you, he is making fun of you. I say this because a truly believe the object of Stephen Colbert witty barbs are not in on the joke, and least most of them. Why else would they invite him to speak at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner?

The DVD presents three hours of material from the The Colbert Report, including some of the most famous recurring bits and one time events. For me the highlights were the regular bits like The Word, all three of them, (truthiness, wikiality, sigh); Better Know A District, especially with Robert Wexler), Sport Report, The Treat Down, etc. On the other hand, many of the one-off events were not as strong. For instance, Guitarmageddon was too much hype and not enough pay-off. The same can be said of Bill O'Reilly's appearance on the show. Other one shot bits, like Cooking With Feminists were highlights of the DVD and I laughed the first time I saw it. And the second time I saw it. And the third. And the fourth. And that was all the same day. They re-run the show a lot on TV.

As for extras, there are no real extras. There's one bit described as a deleted scene from the Eleanor Norton interview, but I can't remember if I saw that one joke on TV or not.

As I mentioned last week, I dislike TV on DVD releases that are not full season sets. The reason for this is simple, what I consider the Best Of is not the same as whoever put together the DVD release. This is true here. That is not to say it is a bad DVD and the hit to miss ratio is high, but I wish there were more interviews and less of the hyped bits. Maybe for the next volume, and I have no doubt there will be more Colbert Report DVDs released as this one is clearly worth picking up.

The Cup - Buy from Amazon
A story about a group of boys at a Buddhist monastery who want to watch the World Cup. It is a simple story, but an effective one. The film was written and directed by Khyentse Norbu, who also made Travellers & Magicians, and who will hopefully made another movie soon.

Da Vinci's Inquest - Season 2 - Buy from Amazon
A Canadian police procedural show starring Nicholas Campbell as Dominic Da Vinci, a cop turned coroner. It is a police procedural show, but it stands out thanks to an incredibly high level of quality. (It was nominated for 65 Gemini awards over its seven year run, winning 18 of them.) Sadly, the extras are not as tightly packed, and the price is high on a per-minute basis, but it is still worth picking up.

Dr. Otto And The Riddle Of The Gloom Beam - Buy from Amazon
Wow. This is a bad, bad movie. I know what you are thinking, you are thinking, "How can the guy who made Ernest Saves Christmas make a bad movie?" Well, he did. However, while this movie is a stinker, it is tremendously bad is a funny way. And if you get the right group of guys together, it can be a fun time.

Ducktales - Volume 3 - Buy from Amazon
One of several Disney after-school cartoons made during the mi-80s, which was arguably the golden age for such TV shows. But has the show aged well? Or is it a relic of another time?

First of all, wow, I don't remember the animation looking so cheap. I guess when you are making 100 episodes over two years, you can't have feature quality animation, but still, it was a bit of a shock. Years do cloud your memories. That said, at least the writing was as strong as I remembered. The characters are well done and the stories including a lot of references to literary and historical figures giving the show a semi-educational quality without interfering with the story.

As for extras, there are none, but this is a common problem for collection of cartoons. The 3-disc set does hit the big three, (play all, proper chapter placement, and subtitles), so at least it gets points there.

I'm still a bigger fan of the spin-off, Darkwing Duck, but the series has held up well and while I would rather pay more and get some extras, the featureless 3-disc set is still worth checking out.

Endgame: Blueprint for Global Enslavement - Buy from Amazon
More than two hours of paranoia digitized and put onto a DVD. It's not even entertaining enough to laugh at. Skip it.

Gilmore Girls - The Complete Seventh Season - Buy from Amazon
The seventh and final season of this show hits the home market this week, but there were very few fans who were happy with this season. Amy Sherman-Palladino, who created the show, left at the end of season six and there was no way the show was going to survive intact. In addition, the extras are lacking. I can imagine a lot of fans skipping out on this season, but that might be an overreaction. Also coming out tomorrow is the Complete Series Megaset, which also has a couple of booklets.

HD-DVD Releases - Buy from Amazon: Ocean's Thirteen, Ocean's Trilogy, Pride & Prejudice, Shrek the Third
We have another massive digitally animated hit being released on high definition this week, so of course the best selling HD-DVD release of the week is ... Pride & Prejudice? At least that's what Amazon is reporting at the moment. Still, this strikes me as very strange.

I Told You I Was Trouble - Amy Winehouse Live From London - Buy from Amazon
Amy Winehouse is releasing a DVD called I Told You I Was Trouble? No comment.

It's a Wonderful Life - Two-Disc Collector's Set - Buy from Amazon
One of the most beloved films of all time. This movie has been released on the home market more than a few times and this isn't even the first special edition DVD. So the real question is whether this DVD is worth upgrading from the previous releases.

When It's a Wonderful Life was first released, it was a critical and box office disappointment. Critics thought the movie was too sentimental and while audiences were not overly impressed. However, it's copyright lapsed in 1974 and the film became public domain. But because it was public domain, it began being aired on TV, a lot. And this exposure brought it a whole new audience who appreciated its old-fashion charm and the film is now considered a holiday classic.

Extras on the DVD are sadly on the light side. Disc 1 starts off with The Making of It's A Wonderful Life, which runs 22 minutes. This is part making of movie, part retrospective and is hosted by Tom Bosley. A Personal Remembrance is hosted by Frank Capra Jr. and features interviews with both the director and the James Stewart. This featurette runs 14 minutes and does have some overlap with the first featurette, but not so much that it isn't worth watching. However, both featurettes were on the previous release. And the release before that.

As for the second disc, it contains the bastardized version, I mean colorized version. ... Nope, I meant bastardized version. I refuse to acknowledge the existence of this version of the movie, so I've already said too much. Moving on.

This DVD release is identical to the 60th Anniversary Edition, right down to the trailer for Last Holiday. The only additional feature is the version that is not to be named. I don't consider that a bonus, so I can't recommend upgrading. I can't even recommend buying it even if you don't have a previous version on the movie on DVD, because you will be paying more and not really getting anything in return. Grab the 60th Anniversary Edition instead.

One final note, I think 28 years is a good length for the copyright of a film and not the 95 years that is currently law. If we went back to that, it would be harder for certain studios to rely so much on re-releasing the same products over and over again.

James Taylor - One Man Band - Buy from Amazon
Sales of CDs have been hurting recently, a lot of this has to do with the poor value of a CD compared to other entertainment choices like DVDs. A lot of this also has to do with the fact that most new music sucks. This CD fixes both problems. This CD/DVD set features the first solo concert performance for James Taylor in 30 years and it's just him, his guitar, and his songs... and his pianist, Larry Goldings. The DVD has the entire concert, including the many stories and jokes James Taylor told, (he starts out with a confident, "Yankees suck!", which won me over right away), as well as a few outtakes from the concert. Even if you have his previous live CD, this one is worth adding to your collection. And if you never heard him perform, it is worth checking out.

Jerome Bixby's The Man from Earth - Buy from Amazon
A cerebral science fiction film about a man who claims he is immortal. Not much in the way of special effects, but the film deals with some interesting topics and is worth picking up, especially given the number of extras on the DVD, (including two audio commentary tracks). Sadly, it seems as if very few people have heard of it.

Johnny Cash Christmas Specials - Buy from Amazon: 1976 and 1977
Two TV specials from the Man in Black that are 30 years old. Combined these two DVDs have more than 3 dozen songs performed by Johnny Cash, June Carter, Roy Orbison, Roy Clark, Barbara Mandrell, Tony Orlando, Jerry Lee Lewis, and more. Easily worth picking up for fans of the singer, or even fans of country music of that era in general.

The Littles - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon
A lesser known Saturday morning cartoon that has a better DVD release than the two Disney releases this week. The Littles is a show about small folk that live in the walls and the small boy who discovers them. It was a good show and most who remembers it will be happy it is on DVD, although I'm not sure just how many do remember it.

Masters of Horror - Dream Cruise - Buy from Amazon
One of the best episode from season 2, but I can't recommend buying the DVD. Instead wait for the inevitable full season set.

Melrose Place - The Third Season - Buy from Amazon
Melrose Place is a nighttime soap about sex, murder, love triangles, incest, doctors in love, spousal abuse, false accusations, amnesia, sibling rivalry... and that just in the season opener.

Like most nighttime soaps, Melrose Place has a massive cast with too many storylines going at any one time that it is nearly impossible to keep track of them unless you've been watching from the beginning. This is probably one of the big draws for fans of these shows, but for me it became tedious. I don't mind complicated plots on a show, but when the plots all seem to revolved around who is sleeping with whom, I lose interest. I need humor to break up the drama or it becomes monotonous.

As for the extras, they are a step down from first two seasons with only three featurettes, only one of which has any real weight. That's the first featurette, Melrose Place: According to Jake, which is an interview with Grant Show, a.k.a. Jake Hanson, (and a couple others), speaking about various aspects of the show, mostly other characters. It runs just over 19 minutes and is worth checking out for fans of the show. On the other hand, Melrose Place: Seven Minutes in Hell, which is just seven minutes of clips from the season three. The clips are too short to give any context, and I assume if you have the DVD, you've watched season three, so I'm not sure what purpose this servers. Everything You Need to Know about Melrose Place: Season Three runs 15 minutes and it a recap of the show told by two people who seem to have as low of an opinion of the show as I do. It doesn't have the replay value that it should.

Melrose Place was a big hit for fans of salacious nighttime soaps. However, while fans of this show will love the over-the-top stories that fill season 3, the extras have taken a turn for the worse and I can't recommend anything more than a rental.

The McCartney Years - Buy from Amazon
This 3-disc set should be a must buy, but there are too many misses pieces. For instance, there are only parts of the 1991 Unplugged and the 1976 Rockshow performances. A complete collection of music videos plus full concert performances would have been better. In fact, a complete collection of music videos or full convert performances would have been better.

Miami Vice - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon
Yet another full series set releases.

Northern Exposure - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon
Yet another complete series set hitting DVD in time for holiday shopping. At least it's got a cool case.

Ocean's Thirteen - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-Ray, or HD-DVD
Ocean's Thirteen earned better reviews than Ocean's Twelve did, but at the box office, it continued the decline the franchise had been suffering. Granted, it wasn't as good as Ocean's Eleven, and perhaps the word-of-mouth suggested renting instead of checking it out in theaters. Unfortunately, renting is all I can recommend as the DVD is weak. There are only three extras, two of which have no replay value, (deleted scenes and a short set tour), while the third has more to do with real-life casinos than it does with the movie itself. On a side note, I hate HD-DVD / DVD Combo discs. They cost more and if you have an HD-DVD player there's no point in getting the DVD version and vice versa. Also, there have been a number of problems reported with these discs, as some players simply can't read them.

Ocean's Trilogy - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD
All three movies from the franchise in one box set, and its being released in all three formats. Like it is usually the case, the DVD release is the best selling, but the Blu-Ray is beating HD-DVD, at least according to Amazon.com sales rankings.

Paris, Je T'Aime - Buy from Amazon: Sigle Disc Edition or 2-Disc Limited Edition
An anthology drama set in Paris. The film earned excellent reviews and the format makes watching it on DVD better than theaters. On the other hand, there's only a making of featurette on the Sigle Disc Edition. Even so, it is still worth checking out, and for most people it is worth purchasing over just renting. On the other hand, there are making of featurettes for each segment on the 2-Disc Limited Edition, a some other extras, making this version the superior version and on a slower week, it could have even been a contender for DVD Pick of the Week.

Perry Mason - Season Two - Volume Two - Buy from Amazon
Raymond Burr returns as the defense attorney, Perry Mason, who, along with Della Street and Paul Drake, help defend the innocent against the police, Lt. Arthur Tragg, and the D.A., Hamilton Burger.

Currently, there is a huge crop of police procedural shows on television, and they owe at least a little to this show, even though it is more of a courtroom drama. It is nice to see a show that is really boiled down to the elements that are needed to make the movie work without the extraneous bits of flash that some series have. (Although it is important to note that for its day, Perry Mason was one of the more expensive shows to make, but this was because of the location shoots.) Because the show can be stripped down to a rather simple formula, it might seem predictable to some; however, it is the variations on the same theme that allows for remarkable creativity on the part of the writers. Also, there was enough humor to help accentuate the drama, which is an aspect of writing that some shows forget.

(I would like to point out, Perry Mason doesn't win every case. At least once he was tricked into defending a guilty party, but I won't say if that's on this release or not.)

(Another side note, I was shocked with some of the police work shown in the series. Lt. Tragg marked a gun as evidence, with a pocket knife. No tag and bag here. Just shows how much the procedure for the police has changed over the years.)

This 4-disc set has the last half of the second season and the 15 episodes are among the strongest in the show's 9-year run. However, there are no extras and I'm not entirely happy with splitting the season into two volumes. I will admit that the running time of the full season would be a little much; after all, it would be equivalent to 35 hour-long episodes today. (There were fewer commercials back then.)

Moving onto the Big Three, the show has the play all button, proper chapter placements, but no subtitles. It was made before the Americans With Disabilities Act, so this is understandable, but disappointing.

Despite the lack of extras and the season splitting, the price still very good for the running time and it is worth picking up. On the other hand, with just a bit of extras, it could have a contender for DVD Pick of the Week. There has to be archival interviews, promotional material, or something out there to put onto the DVDs.

Planet in Peril - Buy from Amazon
I mentioned this last week, but it actually comes out this week.

Pride & Prejudice - Deluxe Two-Disc DVD Gift Set - Buy from Amazon
Not the best adaptation of this story, that would be the BBC miniseries starring Colin Firth. However, this movie comes close. Of note, it hasn't been that long since the film was first released on DVD, which makes it hard to recommend. On the other hand, it is also being released on HD-DVDs, which is a lot more tempting.

The Princess Bride - 20th Anniversary Edition - Buy from Amazon
Arg. This is a great, great movie with a timeless nature. However, the DVD is only incrementally better than the previous DVD release, which was only incrementally better than the release prior to that, which was... I think you get the point. At this rate, it will come out on a top-notch Blu-Ray disc just in time for the latest format to replace high definition. If you don't have it on DVD, pick it up. If you do, it is not worth the upgrade.

Ratatouille - Buy from Amazon: Blu-Ray
Last week we had a spotlight review on the DVD, this week the Blu-Ray disc is examined in more detail.

I won't be discussion the quality of the movie, but the improvements from DVD to Blu-Ray. First all of, we must talk about the video quality, which is amazing. I truly believe that it will be digital animation that makes a lot of people switch to high definition. The format isn't tested by most films, but the detail of digital animation, at least the detail of the top of the line digital animation that Pixar creates really pushes the format. The scenes with the wet rat, the hairs on the wet rat were just amazing. I know, it's a little animation geeky of me, but it's true. I was blown away with how well they were able to render those scenes.

Fortunately, they are not just using the improved video to sell the Blu-Ray release, as the disc is loaded. There are all of the original DVD features on the disc, as well as a game, Gusteau's Gourmet Game, which may or may not entertain the young ones. However, the heart of the disc can be found under Total Menus. Here you can watch the film with the Cine-Explore. Like on the Cars Blu-Ray, Cine-Explore is part audio commentary track, part image gallery, part behind-the-scenes featurette. You can also watch these bonus features by category, (Animation Briefing, Deleted Shots R.I.P., etc.), or individual clips. In total they add more than an hour to the running time, but it's worth it. I would like to point out that watching the Deleted Shots R.I.P. as a 3 minute featurette is better than watching them spread throughout the movie.

Like I said last week, Ratatouille is arguable the best movie I've watched this year, and the Blu-Ray release is the best Blu-Ray release I've ever seen. Easily the DVD Pick of the Week.

Shrek the Third - Buy from Amazon: DVD or HD-DVD
The third installment in the franchise showed dramatic drop-off, both in terms of box office revenue as well as critical reception. So much so that one has to wonder how well The Next Shrek will do in 2010. The DVD looks packed with extras, but for some reason the studio won't release screeners to critics till later this week, so the spotlight review will have to wait till next week at the earliest. On a side note, it is also coming out on a trilogy box set, but only on DVD. Also, with two more movies in the works, I see little reason to buy an incomplete box set.

South Park - Christmas in South Park - Buy from Amazon
Seven episodes from the long running animated series that have two things in common. They are all about Christmas, and they have all been released on DVD already.

The DVD has the seven Christmas episodes from the first eight seasons The seven episodes are...

  1. Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo - The introduction of Mr. Hankey, who is a piece of poo... at least you what kind of entertainment to expect right away. It would be cruel to start out normal and spring something like this on the viewer partway through. There are some funny bits in this episode, including the fake commercial, but I never really liked the character of Mr. Hankey so this episode is not a highlight for me.
  2. Merry Christmas, Charles Manson - The boys go to Cartman's family's home in Nebraska. Uncle Howard escapes... with Charles Manson. The crazy killer is cured by It's a Wonderful Life, which actually makes more sense that the first episode. It is also much more entertaining than the first episode. Much better than the first episode and holds up well compared to the average episode from the series.
  3. Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classic - A spoof on the old claymation Christmas specials featuring a number of songs. Some of songs, like Mr. Mackey's rendition of Carol of the Bells, are actually quite good, but most overstay their welcome very quickly.
  4. A Very Crappy Christmas - South Park doesn't have the Christmas spirit and Kyle thinks it's because Mr. Hankey hasn't shown up, so they head down the sewers to find out why. (Apparently his family life isn't so full of cheer.) There's practically nothing I find funny or entertaining about Mr. Hankey, so having another episode revolve around him it not a selling point.
  5. Red Sleigh Down - A spoof Black Hawk Down with Santa Claus shot down over Iraq. These people need someone to smack them and tell them the joke has run its course. We didn't need to keep cutting back to The 12 Days of Christmas over and over again. It wasn't that funny the first time and it quickly became tedious. That said, it was one of the better episodes.
  6. It's Christmas in Canada - Hey, an episode without Mr. Hankey. Yeah! This time we get a spoof of The Wizard of Oz set in Canada. It's one of the better episodes on this disc, but only average for the show's run.
  7. Woodland Critter Christmas - The best episode on the disc, it follows the story of Kyle being tormented by the narrator and forced into a delightful adventure with the happy animals. This is the first episode on the DVD where I never wanted to shout, "We get the joke. Move on."
As for the extras, there are none.

South Park - Christmas in South Park is a double-dip with absolutely no value for anyone who owns the full-season sets. Additionally, if you don't own the full season sets, odds are you are not interested in a mediocre theme release like this one, as I would only rate half of the episodes as worth watching. Stick with the full season sets.

Spongebob Squarepants - Spongebob's Atlantis SquarePantis - Buy from Amazon
Stick with the full season sets.

TaleSpin - Volume 2 - Buy from Amazon
A spin-off of The Juggle Book with the animal characters in that book set in a story than has almost nothing to do with Mowgli, the man-cub.

Instead, Baloo is an pilot of a cargo plane for his company, called Higher For Hire, which operates out of the small tropical port, Cape Suzette. Other character are here as well King Louie, who runs a bar named Louie's, and Shere Khan, who is a powerful business man. There are also new characters like Kit Cloudkicker, the young sidekick, and Becky Cunningham, Baloo's boss. They have to battle air pirates, the Thembrains, and others in many adventures.

Speaking of adventures, the show is filled with them, many of which are very similar to major movies. This is a highlight of the show's writing as kids can watch the show on one level while parents can have fun catching the inside jokes.

Like the other Disney releases, there are no extras on this 3-disc set. But at least it hits the big three.

Fans of the show, especially those with kids in the right age group, will be happy to check out this 3-disc set. I'd rate it as either a solid rental, or a soft purchase.

This is England - Buy from Amazon
Amazing reviews and a fast start were not enough to help this film find an audience during its theatrical run. Fortunately, the DVD has plenty of extras including an audio commentary track, deleted scenes, making of featurette, and more. Worth picking up.

Tony Hawk's Secret Skatepark Tour - Voluem 2 - Buy from Amazon
Tony Hawk shows up, unannounced, at a local skatepark and performs for the locals with his traveling group. This time around he hits four parks around the country, and even a high school, while the extras include bonus footage, outtakes and more. Worth checking out for fans of skate-boarding.

TV Sci-Fi Bundle - Buy from Amazon
Complete series sets for Buffy, Angel, X-Files, Firefly, and more. Wow. That would make an awesome gift. Too bad I have all but two of those TV shows.

La Vie en Rose - Extended Version - Buy from Amazon
A biography of the singer Edith Piaf. This movie earned good reviews, but not great reviews as many critics complained of the melodramatic nature of the story. Still it is certainly worth checking out, but with limited extras, (the extended version is only 5 minutes longer and there's only one featurette), a rental will suffice.

Welcome To the Jungle - Buy from Amazon
After Michael Rockefeller disappeared into the jungles of New Guinea, it was thought he was killed by cannibals. However, rumors of a white man living amongst the natives spurs four people into the jungle to find him, and get the reward. You can probably guess what happens. With a style borrowed heavily from Blair Witch, and not enough action for the first half, it won't please many. On the other hand, the DVD has a lot more extras than I was expecting with an audio commentary track, making of featurette, and deleted scenes.

Yankeeography Mega-Set 1-4 - Buy from Amazon
Don't you people know the Yankees are evil?

The Young Ones - Extra Stoopid Edition - Buy from Amazon
One of the best nasty BritComs out there, it focused on four students living in a run down student home and featured a brand of comedy that is sure to turn off as many people as it entertains. It also features many bands from the era due to a strange bit of budgeting. (At the time, the BBC was giving more money to variety shows than to comedies, so by having one band perform a song each episode, they got more cash.) This has already been released on a 2-disc DVD, but this new release contains a bonus DVD that includes extras like interviews, making of featurette, as well as audio commentary tracks on the first and last episode. Easily worth the upgrade, and a contender for DVD Pick of the Week. And while you are at it, pick up Bottom - Not Another Half-Arsed DVD Set.
