International Details - Spidey Sinks to Second but Still Reaches Milestones

June 3, 2007

Spider-Man 3 earned a comfortable second place earning almost as much as the rest of the films on this list with $21.07 million on 10,365 screens in 76 markets for a total of $501.00 million. It is only the 14th film to reach that milestone while it became the 16th film to top $800 million worldwide and has already climbed into 14th place overall. The U.K. regained the lead as the best market for the film adding $2.58 million on 460 screens for a total of $61.09 million. Japan took in $2.36 million on 630 screens while France made $2.31 million on 866 screens as the only other two markets to top $2 million over the weekend and the film now has $47.79 million and $48.55 million respectively. There were a quartet of led by Brazil, ($1.29 million for the weekend and $21.55 million in total); Spain, ($1.29 million / $22.49 million); Mexico, ($1.22 million / $32.90 million); and Germany, ($1.01 million / $27.16 million).

  • Zodiac remained in third place with $5.77 million on 1449 screens in 18 markets for an early total of $18.46 million. The film held well in the U.K. down just 25% to $1.24 million on 228 screens for a total of $4.17 million, but its best market was France where it took in $1.72 million on 379 screens for a two-week total of $5.62 million.
  • Shrek the Third collapsed during its second weekend of release down a massive 70%, however, its only major, or even midlevel market was Russia where massive drop-offs are common. Granted, a 71% drop-off to $3.43 million on 596 is still higher than the studio would like, but its running tally of $18.78 million is still excellent. Overall the film added $4.33 million on 642 screens for a very early international total of $22.91 million.
  • Fracture grabbed a spot in the top five with $2.68 million on 1009 screens in 17 markets for a total of $20.67 million. Its biggest single market was France where it brought in $1.05 million on 308 screens over the weekend and $6.23 million in total.
  • Shoot Out At Lokhandwala opened in sixth place with $1.51 million on 454 screens in 17 markets, including $115,000 on 19 screens in the U.K.
  • 28 Weeks Later remained in seventh place despite falling 53% to $1.48 million on 749 screens in 12 markets for a total of $13.35 million. Most of its weekend box office, and indeed its international total, has come from the U.K. as it managed $1.09 million on 380 screens over the weekend and $8.61 million in total.
  • Secret Sunshine opened in second place in South Korea with $1.39 million on 243 screens over the weekend and $2.34 million in total.
  • Cheeni Kum was the second Indian film on this week's list after it earned $1.44 million on 361 screens in 15 markets.
  • Mr. Bean's Holiday just managed a spot in the top ten with $1.39 million on 1981 screens in 38 markets for a total of $178.69 million.
  • Next tumbled from 5th to 11th with $1.31 million on 794 screens in 20 markets for a total of $23.65 million. The film has already made more internationally than it did domestically, but that is hardly reason to celebrate.
  • Wild Hogs was the last film to reach $1 million this weekend placing 12th with $1.20 million on 1067 screens in 24 markets for a total of $77.14 million. The film isn't finished its international run, but the odds of hit reaching any more milestones are slim.
