Limited Release are Getting Heavy
June 20, 2008
Just three new limited releases this week, while My Winnipeg expands into its native Canada. Of the three new movies, Kitt Kittredge has the best shot at expanding, mainly because its wide release is already scheduled for next weekend. Additionally, the advertising push for its wide release could help it during its one week limited engagement.

Kitt Kittredge: An American Girl - Reviews
Based on a book that generated award buzz when it was released, this movie is earned more tepid praise. It is not a bad movie, but at just 62% positive it is not likely to thrive on the art house scene. Many critics are complimenting the acting while lamenting the script, which is being described as slow, predictable, and trite. Brick Lane opens tonight in seven theaters, mostly in the Los Angeles area.
A follow-up to Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, this Canadian documentary tells the tale of Heavy Metal, and the musical genre's effect around the world. This is a genre that is largely associated with America and the U.K., but this film looks at where the genre is growing today, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, China, and how this new breed of musicians are changing the genre. If you enjoyed the previous film, you should check out this one as well. Global Metal - No Reviews opened tonight in Toronto and Vancouver while it expands into Calgary and Montreal next Friday.
The fourth film in this franchise, but the first to be released theatrically. However, with reviews that are only marginally above the overall positive level, there's little hope that it will set the art house circuits on fire. Then again, this is a movie aimed at younger girls, who are not the main demographic for most limited releases and should do better in multiplexes. Or at least is would if it wasn't expanding the same weekend Wall-E comes out; I would be amazed if it isn't crushed by the competition. A better release schedule and it could have been a solid midlevel hit. Kitt Kittredge: An American Girl opens tonight in 5 theaters in major cities nationwide.
