International Details - Narnia Softens

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian slipped 21% during its sophomore stint adding $19.35 million on 3681 screens in 13 markets for a still early total of $51.26 million. This includes a first place, $5.34 million opening on 782 screens over the weekend in Japan, while the film has $7.81 million including midweek numbers. This was below the original's opening in that market of $8.92 million, which is troubling. More troubling news came in Mexico where it was down 51% to $3.05 million on 842 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.58 million while in Russia it was down 55% to $3.03 million on 735 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.54 million after two.

  • Whap Happens in Vegas... remained in third place with $13.07 million on 3862 screens in 56 markets for a total of $77.46 million. The film had no new openings this weekend, and has precious few markets left to open in in the future, but it is screaming towards $100 million internationally and even has a shot at $200 million worldwide. It is safe to call the film a financial success, regardless of what happened from now on.
  • The only other film to crack $10 million over the weekend was Iron Man, which pulled in $11.71 million on 5886 screens in 54 markets for a total of $228.97 million. The film has yet to open in Japan, and won't till September, but in the meantime it should reach $250 million internationally and more than $550 million worldwide.
  • Made of Honour remained in fifth place with just $3.32 million on 1695 screens in 25 markets for a total of $25.56 million. It has yet to open in about half of the major markets, which is good news because it hasn't exactly proven itself yet, but if it does well from now on, it could wind up a midlevel hit.
  • Speed Racer plummeted 57% to a mere $3.11 million on 3351 screens in 39 markets for a total of $30.68 million so far. The film has yet to open in Russia, Australia, France, and Japan, but I can't see it turning its box office run around at this point.
  • Gomorrah was pushed into second place in Italy but remained in seventh place internationally with $2.62 million on 425 screens over the weekend and now has $7.53 million in total.
  • Partners: The Movie actually climbed a spot to eighth internationally despite slipping to second in Japan. Over the weekend it added $2.08 million on 303 screens for a total of $30.96 million.
  • Rambo opened in its final market, Japan, scoring third place there with $2.01 million on 304 screens. This was enough to give the film ninth place internationally, while its running tallies reached $63.95 million internationally and $106.67 million worldwide.
  • 21 nearly fell out of the top ten with $1.87 million on 1037 screens in 34 markets for a total of $49.27 million. It wasn't able to earn $1 million in any single market, but that should change next week when it debuts in Japan.
  • Bhoothnath slipped a spot to 11th with $1.24 million on 688 screens in 13 markets for a total of $10.21 million so far.
  • The Bucket List added $1.18 million on 396 screens in 15 markets for an international total of $76.26 million.
  • A Christmas Tale opened in-- wait. What? Isn't it a little early for Chirstmas? Oh well. A Christmas Tale opened in France with $1.04 million on just 102 screens landing in third place in the process. Meanwhile it also opened in Switzerland with $16,000 on 11 screens over the weekend and $30,000 in total.
  • Superhero Movie had the worst drop-off on the charts this week down nearly 60% to $1.03 million on 522 screens in 12 markets for a total of $20.19 million so far.
Welcome to the Sticks dropped below the $1 million mark with $663,000 on 513 screens in 4 markets for a total of $202.52 million internationally. This includes $182.44 million from France, including $520,000 on 460 screens over the weekend. So far the film has sold 20.08 million tickets in its native market as it slowly marches towards Titanic's record of 20.64 million tickets sold. It is getting more and more unlikely that it will get there, especially before it falls out of the top ten. If it can get to $187 million, then it will have crossed the threshold.
