International Details - Narnia is Prince of the International Charts

May 25, 2008

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian opened in second place on the international charts with $23.31 million on 3037 screens in 12 markets giving it the best per screen average on this week's list. The film only opened in three major markets, but it finished first in all of them. This includes Russia where it managed $6.73 million on 735 screens and Mexico where it earned $6.27 million on 842 and in both cases it opened significantly higher than the original. On the other hand, while it managed first place in South Korea, its opening of $3.42 million on 670 screens over the weekend and a total of $3.90 million is significantly lower than the originals opening of $3.94 million on 262 screens over three days and $5.22 million in total. Next up for the film is its debut in Japan this weekend, while it has major openings all the way till late August.

  • Thanks to a number of smaller openings and gains in major markets, Whap Happens in Vegas... only declined 7% this weekend while nearly capturing second spot. It was able to add $23.10 million on 4265 screens in 56 markets for a total of $57.09 million, which is well ahead of its domestic pace. In fact, with a few major markets left to open in, the film has a real shot at topping $100 million internationally and $200 million worldwide. (The former is much more likely than the latter.) The film was up 20% in the U.K. remaining in second place with $2.98 million on 405 screens for a total of $6.92 million after two weeks. In Germany it performed even better up 33% to $2.48 million on 509 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.34 million after two. It was not as strong as in Russia where it was down 44% to $2.08 million on 476 screens for a total of $6.90 million, but the competition there was stronger.
  • Speed Racer was one of the few films in the top ten to suffer significant declines with week as it was down 40% to $7.24 million on 4219 screens in 39 markets for a total of just $24.63 million. The film was down 69% during its second weekend in South Korea adding just $715,000 on 366 screens fore a total of $4.65 million after two weeks. It performed better in Mexico down just 43% to $1.13 million on 403 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.25 million after two. It actually grew in the U.K. up 13% to $808,000 on 457 screens over the weekend, but its two-week total of $1.76 million is still massively disappointing. It still has a few major markets left to open in, but there's little hope that the movie will be anything other than a massive bomb.
  • Made of Honour had million dollar opening in both Germany ($1.60 million on 497 screens) and Brazil ($1.03 million on 147 screens). This helped the film climb nearly 80% to $5.74 million on 1974 screens in 25 markets for a total of $19.67 million after three weeks of release.
  • 21 also grow substantially earning $3.98 million on 1363 screens in 40 markets for a total of $46.21 million. Much of this growth came from Australia where it placed third during its debut with $1.47 million on 191 screens.
  • Gomorrah opened in Italy over the weekend earning first place with $2.85 million on 441 screens.
  • Superhero Movie also opened in Italy scoring second place with $1.99 million on 362 screens. This was enough to help the film back onto the international charts with $2.49 million on 704 screens in 12 markets for a total of $18.62 million so far.
  • Partners: The Movie was the top film on the box office charts in Japan for the third weekend in a row adding $2.24 million on 303 screens to its running tally of $25.87 million.
  • Bhoothnath had one of the worst declines on this week's chart down more than 50% to $2.24 million on 764 screens in 15 markets for a total of $7.26 million. The film is doing weak but respectably business in India, but very poorly in other markets.
  • Jannat was even weaker internationally with $2.08 million on 693 screens in 15 markets. However, it performed well in India and its reportedly low production costs will help its bottom line.
  • D-War returned to the charts in 12th place thanks to its opening in second place in China with $1.65 million on 610 screens over the weekend and $2.14 million in total. That is the only market the film is currently placing in, and it appears to be the last market it will be in. This means it won't add much to its international box office of $66.98 million and that makes profitability unlikely, even if the studio manages to use the CGI technology it developed on other projects.
  • In Bruges also returned to the charts landing in 13th place with $1.60 million on 535 screens in 12 markets for a total of $10.90 million. This includes an impressive 4th place opening in Germany with $559,000 on just 96 screens while it was less successful in Italy placing 8th with $310,000 on 151 screens. Additionally, the film grew by 30% in its native U.K. to $263,000 on 150 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.93 million after nearly 3 months of release.
  • The Forbidden Kingdom had the worst decline on the charts this week down nearly 60% to $1.56 million on 1142 screens in 14 markets for a total of $49.55 million. It should drop off the charts next week, but return in July when it expands to Europe in earnest.
  • Foregtting Sarah Marshall remaining relatively flat up 2% to $1.50 million on 651 screens in 9 markets for a still early total of $21.77 million. The majority of the film's total box office has come from the U.K. where it has earned $12.70 million after four weeks, including $1.12 million on 395 screens this past weekend.
  • Nim's Island was down just 1% to $1.46 million on 1025 screens in 17 markets for a total of $24.19 million. The film had a few debuts last weekend, but now were major markets. The next such opening happens in Germany in June, and it is likely that the film will drop off the charts before then.
  • The Bucket List was down 33% in Japan but still remained in second place with $1.23 million on 224 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.00 million. Overall it fell to 17th place with $1.44 million on 483 screens in 19 markets for a total of $73.52 million.
  • Deux Jours A Tuer climbed 38% to $1.37 million on 481 screens in 2 markets for a two-week total of $5.89 million, nearly all of which has come from France.
  • Cleaner entered the charts for the first time landing in 19th place with $1.29 million on 291 screens in 4 markets for a very early total of $1.92 million. Of that, $1.05 million was earned on 156 screens during the film's fourth place debut in France.
  • Street Kings opened in third place in Belgium with $184,000 on 30 screens, which is better than it has managed in most markets. Overall it added $1.17 million on 1044 screens in 28 markets for a total of $29.78 million.
  • Taken fell out of the top twenty with $1.12 million on 365 screens in 6 markets for a total of $26.89 million.
  • Japan was Charlie Wilson's War's final major market, but it performed poorly during its opening there. Third place isn't bad, but with just $1.07 million on 296 screens, its per screen average will likely result in relatively steep declines and it won't add much more to its international total of $48.13 million.
  • Ca$h grew by 10% just climbing above the $1 million market to $1.05 million on 516 screens in 3 markets over the weekend while it has made $9.46 million in total, most of which as come from France.
  • Hidden Fortress: The Last Princess slipped to fourth place in Japan and 24th internationally with $1.04 million on 315 screens for a total of $4.23 million after two weeks.
  • Welcome to the Sticks returned to the $1 million club with $1.02 million on 632 screens in 12 markets for a total of $200.85 million. Of this, $181.81 million has come from 20.01 million admissions in France, leaving it just over 600,000 tickets away from overtaking Titanic's record of 20.64 million tickets sold. It is too close to say whether it will get there or not. For that matter, the distributor might decide to try and push it over the top if it falls just short.
