DVD Sales - Alvin Repeats on Top
April 21, 2008
Despite numerous new releases that charted this week, seven in fact, Alvin and the Chipmunks remained in top spot on the DVD sales chart. It's rare for a film to repeat on top of the charts, but Alvin was able to do so despite a 72% drop-off from its opening and added 872,000 units and $14.38 million in spending. This lifts its total to 4.02 million units / $66.34 million making it the third best selling DVD of the year so far.
Water Horse: Legend of the Deep opened in second place with $11.98 million in revenue from 611,000 units while There Will Be Blood opened in third place with 496,000 units / $9.64 million in opening week sales. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Baker Street pushed its running tally over 1 million units with 243,000 units for the week and now has total sales of 1.11 million and $22.40 million. The final film in the top five was Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, which had opening week sales of 231,000 units and $4.49 million. This is relatively better than its theatrical opening at the box office, but still disappointing.
Lions for Lambs was equally disappointing in its debut, placing seventh with 196,000 units sold while it only brought in $3.52 million in revenue for the week. P2 opened in 12th place with just 67,000 units / $1.19 million. Next up was Resurrecting the Champ in 16th place with 43,000 units / $852,000 while Reservation Road landed in 20th place with 40,000 units / $724,000 during its first week of release.
Moving onto the format war, Blu-ray earned 85% of the High Definition market while picking up 5% in the Top 20 DVD vs. Top 20 Blu-ray comparison. Again, the top four DVDs were either kids movies or did not come out in Blu-ray, so that ratio was expected. On the other hand, it was reported that Blu-ray sales grew by more than 350% in the first quarter compared to the first quarter of 2007. In fact, this helped compensate for lower DVD sales to give the overall market a modicum of growth.
