DVD Rentals - Traffic Jam at the Top
January 7, 2008
For most of the year, it was hard to find a single rental to earn $10 million during the week. This week we have four such films. This includes the 'new release' of Rush Hour 3, which actually came out on Sunday and appeared on last week's list as well. This week it pulled in $11.85 million in rentals for a total of $18.20 million so far.
The Kingdom climbed into second place during its first full week of release with $11.15 million in rentals for an early total of $16.78 million. The Simpsons Movie held on strong down less than 10% to $10.62 million over the week and $23.47 million after two. The Bourne Ultimatum fell from first to fourth but still managed $10.43 million over the week and $38.63 after three, making it one of the best renters of the year. The final film in the top five was The Heartbreak Kid at $8.45 million for the week and $13.39 million including early rentals.
Eastern Promises placed 12th during its first full week of rentals with $4.79 million while its total of $7.41 million is close to half of the film's theatrical run. Jackass 2.5 was right behind it with $4.18 million for the week. The Brothers Solomon earned 17th place with $3.10 million, which was more than three times what it earned theatrically, while the direct-to-DVD release, Shattered, placed 18th with $2.87 million. The final new release of the week was American Pie Presents Beta House, which placed 26th with $1.94 million for the week and $3.09 million including early rentals.
