Weekend Estimates: Jackson Finale Disappoints in US, Hits Big Internationally
November 1, 2009
Michael Jackson's This Is It topped the box office chart in the United States this weekend, but with a relatively disappointing $21.3 million Friday to Sunday, according to Sony's estimates.
While that's good for a concert/documentary film, it's some way behind the $31.1 million opening three-day weekend of the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus concert released in 2008.
In fact, This Is It's five day total of $32.5 million only just beats out the Disney concert pic.
Internationally, however, Sony has a winner, with $68.5 million in receipts so far, taking the movie just over the $100 million mark after five days.
That makes the studio's $60 million investment look like a good one, even if US audiences haven't flocked to the movie as expected.
The rest of the chart had a familiar look to it, with no other wide new releases.
Paranormal Activity had another good weekend, fueled by Halloween weekend.
It dropped just 21% to $16.54 million, and looks set for $100 million, even if it falls away rapidly from now on.
The Boondock Saints 2: All Saint's Day was the best of the new limited releases for which we have numbers so far.
The cult sequel earned $460,000 in 68 theaters for an average close to $7,000.
An Education continued its fantastic limited run with $505,000 in 48 theaters, topping a $10,000 average again.
