DVD Sales - Getting Hitched to Proposal
October 27, 2009
The Proposal led all new releases and totally dominated the sales chart this week selling 2.41 million units generating $39.26 million in the process.
Land of the Lost opened in second place but was well back with just 461,000 units sold and $7.37 million during its opening week of sales. Monsters vs. Aliens fell to third place with 381,000 units for the week for totals of 3.33 million units and $58.08 million after three weeks of release. Drag Me To Hell earned fourth place with 341,000 units and $5.80 million while X-Men Origins - Wolverine rounded out the top five with 178,000 units / $2.75 million for the week and 3.70 million units / $62.87 million after five.
Katt Williams - Pimpadelic opened in eighth place with 97,000 units and $1.66 million in opening week sales. It placed very high on the charts for a stand-up concert release. Legend of the Seeker - Season One earned 18th place with 61,000 units / $1.94 million.
Blu-ray sales remained strong at $25.1 million for the week. Granted, this was down 23.4% from last week, but 82% higher than the same weekend last year. Compared to DVDs, Blu-ray represented 13.2% of total sales and 16.5% of the top 20 comparison. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs remained the number one selling Blu-ray with roughly 500,000 units sold this week, but of course that's the Blu-ray / DVD combo packs, so there's some controversy with regards to those totals and whether they should all be counted as Blu-ray sales. The best new release of the week was The Proposal with 180,000 units, which was a little weaker than expected when compared to the number of DVDs is sold.
