Limited Releases Heating Up

Could Awards Season be unofficially starting this week? We do have a period piece, Bright Star, which could earn some Awards Season buzz, which in turn could help it at the box office.

Written and directed by Jane Campion. It's a period piece about poet John Keats and his romance with Fanny Brawne. The film is earning some of the best reviews of the week, and given its sub-genre, it could earn some Awards Season buzz. It's still a little on the early side for that, but it has a shot. Bright Star opens tonight in 19 theaters in cities nationwide.
Written and directed by Guillermo Arriaga, who previously wrote 21 Grams, but this is his first feature-length movie. So far the reviews are not indicative of a good start into the new field. There are some critics that are praising the some of the performances, but the fractured storytelling doesn't help lift the material. The Burning Plain opens tonight in more than 20 theaters in select cities nationwide.
Jessica Graham stars as Fay, a woman who takes a road trip along Route 66, but becomes stranded in the desert after her car breaks down after a drag race. It is likely the wrong genre to thrive in limited release, but you can already pre-order the DVD. Devil Girl opens tonight for a very limited theatrical run (one night only in New York, for instance) but more dates could be added so check out the Official Site.
A French film that celebrates the city of Paris. This film made a monster amount of money internationally, but its reviews here are only good, but perhaps not good enough to thrive in limited release. On the other hand, the film was nominated for three César Awards and if it can get some buzz, it could find a receptive audience in limited releases. Paris opens tonight in six theaters mostly in the Los Angeles area.
