DVD Sales - Hannah and Miley Double Down on Top
September 9, 2009
Despite an onslaught of ten new releases to reach the top 30 on the sales chart this week, and seven in the top ten, Hannah Montana the Movie remained in top spot for the second week in a row. During its second weekend of release the film sold 408,000 units to lift its total to 1.64 million after two, while it consumer spending at retail was $7.04 million for the week and $27.63 million after two.
The best of the new releases was Fighting, which opened in second place with 249,000 units sold and $3.98 million in spending while Duplicity was a tiny fraction behind at 239,000 units sold and $3.82 million. House, M.D. - Season Five opened in fourth place in terms of units sold at 223,000, but thanks to its TV on DVD pricing, it earned $6.03 million.
Smallville - Season Eight was even more extreme, as it placed fifth with 183,000 units, but was nearly number one with $6.67 million.
Just missing the top five was Adventureland at 160,000 units / $2.92 million, which is strong considering its box office run.
A pair of TV on DVD releases were next with NCIS - Season Six landing in eighth with 127,000 while One Tree Hill - Season Six landed in ninth place with 109,000 units.
Just missing the top ten was Sunshine Cleaning with 99,000 units / $1.73 million in sales, which is a good start for a limited release.
Scrubs - Season Eight opened in 12th place with 97,000 units / $2.52 million during its first week of release.
The final new release to chart was WWE - The Rise and Fall of WCW, which placed 15th with 78,000 units and $1.82 million in consumer spending.
It was another slow week for Blu-ray sales as total sales were down 21% from last week to $10.5 million, which was the lowest weekly total since February.
However, that's still 49% higher than the same week last year, and it was one of weakest selections of Blu-ray releases for a while.
Compared to DVD, Blu-ray represented 7.1% of total sales, which was the weakest figure since April, but 9.3% of the top 20 comparison, which was better than last week.
There was a virtual tie for top spot with Fighting just topping Adventureland, both with 30,000 units sold.
Sales won't pick up for a few weeks -- not until Wolverine is released.
