International Details - Still a Force to be Reckoned With
September 5, 2009
The top five films on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.
G-Force just missed the top five with $7.09 million on 2964 screens in 30 markets for a total of $67.97 million. The film had no major market openings this week, but it did add $2.17 million on 409 screens in Russia for a total of $8.93 million after two weeks there. Up next is Spain this weekend, which means it could climb back into the top five, if it performs well there.
- Up added $6.95 million on 2146 screens in 22 markets for a total of $157.59 million so far. It too did not have a major market opening this past weekend, but it is still a player in France and Spain. In the former it fell from second to fourth with $3.60 million on 720 screens over the full week for a total of $30.26 million after four. While in the latter it rose from second to first with $1.35 million on 489 screens over the weekend for a total of $29.96 million after a month of release. Next up for the film is Australia this weekend, while it has also yet to open in Germany, the U.K., Italy and Japan. Given this, $300 million is the lower end of expectations, while $400 million is a real possibility.
- High Security Vacation opened in eighth place with $6.90 million on 1132 screens in 2 markets over the weekend for a total of $9.85 million. Of that, $6.28 million was earned on 481 screens over the weekend in Russia while it now has $8.93 million in its native market. The rest was earned in neighboring Ukraine.
- The Hangover is starting to fade down the chart falling to ninth place with $6.40 million on 2591 screens in 45 markets for a total of $162.60 million internationally and $432.84 million worldwide. The film is coasting on holdovers, but even if it doesn't hit another milestone, and that seems likely, the studio has to be ecstatic about the film's performance at the box office. It may have made, depending on its worldwide P&A budget, the studio's share of the box office, and other factors that won't be revealed to the public, but it may be made $200 million in pure profit, before you take into account the home market. Simply amazing.
- G.I.Joe barely managed to hold onto a spot in the top ten with $6.18 million on 4582 screens in 51 markets, while its total grew to $131.04 million after four weeks of release. Its international total is just behind its domestic pace, but that will change once it opens in Italy next week, if it hasn't already.
- The Ugly Truth $3.98 million on 1050 screens in 12 markets for a still early total of $22.87 million. The film opened in sixth place in France with $2.25 million on 248 screens, but that was for the full week.
- The Proposal fell out of the top ten with $3.46 million on 1766 screens in 36 markets for a total of $116.65 million. However, this week it opens in Italy and South Korea, so it should climb higher on the chart, while it has openings in France and Japan still to come.
- Take Off remained in first place in South Korea while fell to 13th place internationally with $3.40 million on 480 screens over the weekend giving it a total of $36.02 million after a month of release.
- Gasp opened in China with $3.22 million on 435 screens, which was enough for 14th place internationally.
- The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 opened in Australia in second place with $1.44 million on 246 screens. Overall it climbed into 15th place with $3.09 million on 1363 screens in 28 markets for a total of $40.81 million.
- Haeundae is starting to spread earning $3.05 million on 711 screens in 2 markets for a total of $61.57 million. So far the film has made $61.00 million in South Korea, including $2.23 million on 454 screens this past weekend.
- Neuilly Sa Mère! added $2.98 million on 427 screens in 3 markets for a total of $11.00 million after three weeks of release. Of its weekend number, it earned $2.60 million on 400 screens in France giving it $8.03 million in total there.
- Public Enemies fell from 8th to 18th place with $2.89 million on 2137 screens in 42 markets for a total of $91.60 million after two months of release.
- Aliens in the Attic saw its box office numbers grow 24% to $2.86 million on 1618 screens in 15 market for a total of $15.44 million. The film opened in second place in Mexico, but only managed $543,000 on 313 screens, while it added $975,000 on 452 screens in the U.K. for a total of $6.44 million after three.
- District 9 fell to 20th place with $2.73 million on 875 screens in 18 markets for a total of $18.45 million. This includes a fourth place, $327,000 opening on 35 screens in Sweden. The film opens this weekend in the U.K. and in Germany next weekend, and it should climb the chart when it does.
- A Prophet opened in fifth place in France with $2.84 million on 294 screens, but that was for the full week. Over the weekend it made $2.49 million on 320 screens in two markets.
- Horst Schlammer - Isch Kandidiere! remained in second place in Germany while it dropped to 22nd place overall with $2.35 million on 358 screens in 2 markets for a total of $6.82 million overall.
- Sophie's Revenge added $2.15 million on 355 screens in three markets, including China, and it now has $12.36 million in total.
- Kung Fu Cyborg fell below the $2 million threshold with $1.98 million on 331 screens in 2 markets for a total of $6.16 million after two weeks of release.
- My Sister's Keeper grew 73% just missing the $2 million mark with $1.93 million on 813 screens in 17 markets for a total of $24.73 million. The film opened in Germany, but struggled with just $764,000 on 206 screens, which was only enough for eighth place.
A couple other films of note. Firstly, Funny People opened in the U.K., but only managed third place with $1.44 million on 382 screens. Overall it made $1.65 million on 407 screens in 3 markets for an early total of $2.91 million. This is weaker than its opening here, which was weaker than expectations. Finally, Case 39 made its international debut in Spain earning third place with $1.13 million on 221 screens. The film has been pulled from the schedule here, but maybe strong international numbers will help convince the studio to release the film here. However, this is not a particularly strong opening.
