August 8, 2009
The top film on the international scene was published on Wednesday and can be found here.
Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs became the all-time highest grossing animated film on the international scene during the past week. Over the weekend it earned $24.66 million on 8844 screens in 68 markets for a total of $551.39 million internationally, which tops the $526.88 million earned by Finding Nemo. On the other hand, that film made $866.59 million worldwide compared to this film's running tally of $733.45 million. Ice Age isn't done yet, and should reach a couple milestones before it is done. but the record is likely safe.
- Up returned to the chart for the first time in a month thanks to openings in Spain and South Korea. In the former it opened in first place as it made $6.52 million on 603 screens over the weekend and $7.86 million in total, while in the latter it placed third with $1.80 million on 484 screens over the weekend and $2.52 million in total. It also opened in first place in France with $11.00 million on 718 screens, but that was for the full week. Overall it added $23.57 million on 2160 screens in 19 markets for a relatively early total of $79.55 million, and given its per screen average, it should continue to place well on the charts for quite a while.
- Love Aaj Kal is the latest Indian film to chart, as it seems that market has rebounded after an extended slump. The film took fourth place internationally with $11.72 million on 1664 screens in 17 markets, and it wasn't the only Indian film to chart this week.
- G-Force charted for the first time during its run with $11.65 million on 2019 screens in 15 markets for an early total of $12.51 million. It was able to earn second place in the U.K. with $4.15 million on 496 screens, while it also placed second in Mexico with $2.54 million on 690 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.79 million.
- The Proposal remained in sixth place with $11.55 million on 2387 screens in 33 markets for a total of $78.21 million. In Germany the film opened with $4.59 million on 610 screens placing second in the process. Meanwhile in the U.K. it was down 54%, but there were three new wide releases this past weekend so the competition was strong. It still managed to add $2.49 million on 430 screens giving the film $11.53 million after two weeks of release.
- Public Enemies fell from third to seventh with $9.39 million on 2520 screens in 38 markets for a total of $51.33 million. The film did manage first place during its opening in Australia, where it earned $2.66 million on 284 screens.
- Haeundae remained in first place in South Korea with $9.34 million on 712 screens and now has $27.81 million in total. This represents 5% growth from its opening. That's very impressive, especially for that market.
- The lack of major openings didn't hurt The Hangover too much as it was down just 17% to $8.35 million on 2137 screens in 39 markets for a total of $116.00 million. This includes a sophomore stint in Germany where it added $2.67 million on 428 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.30 million.
- The Taking Of Pelham climbed into tenth place with $7.69 million on 1537 screens in 21 markets for a total of $18.99 million. Its big opening of the past weekend came in the U.K. where it placed third with $2.99 million on 380 screens, while it earned fourth place in France with $2.87 million on 393 screens, but that was for the full week. In Spain it was down just 35% to $1.44 million on 401 screens for a two-week total of $4.73 million.
- On His Majesty's Secret Service opened in China with $4.75 million on 405 screens.
- Overheard was right behind with $4.34 million on 624 screens in 4 markets for a total of 13.81 million. This includes $963,000 on 47 screens in its native Hong Kong this past weekend, which was enough for second place in that market.
- Take Off opened in second place in South Korea and 13th place internationally with $4.13 million on 555 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.59 million.
- Bruno saw its weekend haul sliced in half to $3.64 million on 2315 screens in 30 markets for a total of $66.94 million.
- Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen added $3.50 million on 3581 screens in 57 markets over the weekend for a total of $422.15 million internationally and $810.34 million worldwide. It became only the 20th film to reach that mark at the worldwide box office, while it should climb a few more spots before its run is over.
- Magadheera was the second Indian film to chart this past week earning $3.14 million on 687 screens in 13 markets, earning 16th place in the process.
- Terminator Salvation returned to the chart in 17th place with $3.13 million on 1279 screens in 21 markets for a total of $240.81 million internationally and $365.29 million worldwide. The film did have some good news, as it opened on top of the chart in Mexico with $2.87 million on 771 screens, but I don't think the studio will look at its box office total and decide to make another installment in the franchise.
- Pokemon 2009 remained in second place in Japan with $3.11 million on 366 screens giving the film $27.87 million after three weeks of release.
- Amalfi: Rewards of the Goddess remained in third place in Japan with $2.92 million on 357 screens over the weekend for a total of $19.54 million, also after three weeks of release.
- Bolt returned to the chart in 20th place with $2.77 million on 482 screens over the weekend for a total of $187.13 million internationally and $301.19 million worldwide. All of its weekend haul came from the film's fourth place opening in Japan, which is its last market that it will open in.
- McDull, Kung Fu Kindergarten fell to 21st place overall with $2.62 million on 305 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.04 million. All of that came from China.
- My Sister's Keeper returned to the chart with $2.30 million on 536 screens in 7 markets for a total of $15.20 million so far. In Australia the film opened in third place with $1.91 million on 210 screens, which was enough for third place in that market. It has yet to open in most major markets, including Germany, where it opens in at the end of the month, while it doesn't end its run till the end of the year.
- Drag Me to Hell also returned to the chart earning $2.09 million on 757 screens in 17 markets for a total of $33.47 million. The film opened in third place in Spain with $1.33 million on 282 screens, while it added $472,000 on 139 screens in Australia for a total of $1.70 million there after two weeks of release.
- Naruto Shippuden: Hi No Ishi Wo Tsugu Mono opened in fifth place in Japan and 24th place internationally with $2.03 million on 266 screens.
