International Details - New Number One for the Year
July 19, 2009
The top film on the international scene was published on Wednesday and can be found here.
Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen became the biggest hit of the year on the international scene, at least for a little while. Over the weekend it added $34.27 million on 8210 screens in 62 markets for a total of $371.24 million internationally and $710.46 million worldwide. It has overtaken Angels and Demons for the biggest international hit of 2009, for the time being, while it is just ahead of the original's worldwide total.
- Bruno opened in second place with $23.77 million on 2188 screens in 17 markets. The film's biggest market was the U.K. where it made $8.01 million on 456 screens, while it also managed first place in Australia with $4.54 million on 334 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.82 million. It had to settle for second place in Germany with $2.91 million on 470 screens and third place in Spain with just $885,000 on 307. That said, the film has already made enough money to ensure a profit sooner rather than later.
- Public Enemies expanded into nearly a dozen new markets lifting its weekend haul to $7.53 million on 1639 screens in 16 markets for a total of $16.37 million. The film earned $4.92 million on 471 screens over the full week in France, but fell more than 50% during the weekend in $1.68 million on 455 screens for a total of $6.39 million after two. I was expecting it to hold on better than that, and that is troublesome for a film that cost more than $100 million to make.
- The Proposal returned to the top five with $7.37 million on 2073 screens in 21 markets for a total of $40.82 million. The film opened in second place in Spain with $1.35 million on 350 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.49 million. It also earned second place in Brazil during its first full weekend of release with $1.15 million on 175 screens giving it a running tally of $1.40 million.
- The Hangover is closing in on $100 million internationally after making $7.17 million on 1849 screens in 31 markets this past weekend and it now has $76.24 million after a month of release. No major openings didn't hurt the film too much and it added $1.98 million on 402 screens over the weekend in the U.K. giving the film $26.53 million after a month of release.
- Gokusen opened in first place in Japan and seventh place internationally with $5.28 million on 409 screens over the weekend.
- Like most Indian films, Kambakkht Ishq collapsed during its second weekend of release down more than 60%. However, with $4.74 million on 1422 screens in 16 markets over the weekend, and $19.09 million after two, it is still a big hit, especially in comparison to other films from that country that have come out in the past couple years.
- Shortkut, another Indian film, opened right behind with $3.77 million on 833 screens in 15 markets. It was a much smaller debut, but its per screen average was healthy.
- Evangelion: You Can (Not) Advance slipped into second place in Japan and tenth place internationally. Over the past weekend, the movie made $2.88 million on 120 screens in its native market for a total of $21.39 million after three.
- Hannah Montana the Movie remained in 11th place internationally with $2.79 million on 1517 screens in 27 markets for a total of $61.29 million. Overall it lost screens and markets this past weekend, but grew in part thanks to a 36% growth in its weekend haul in Australia. It made $1.42 million on 269 screens giving it a total of $5.20 million after three.
- Knowing returned to the chart in 12th place with $2.61 million on 487 screens in 13 markets for a total of $90.21 million. Of this weekend total, $2.38 million was earned on 320 screens during the film's opening weekend in Japan and it now has $3.11 million in total there. With a couple more markets left to open in, there's little reason to doubt it will reach $100 million internationally, while it could come close to $200 million worldwide.
- The final $2 million movie was Terminator Salvation with $2.13 million on 2378 screens in 57 markets for a total of $232.32 million internationally and $355.43 million worldwide.
Monsters vs. Aliens opened in Japan, but struggled with just $1.35 million on 397 screens. I was expecting a lot more. Overall it made $1.38 million on 458 screens in 12 markets for a total of $175.66 million, which is more than enough to ensure profitability, even if it cost more to make tan the $175 million reported.
