Life's a Beach on the Per Theater Chart

July 14, 2009

There was a mix of old and new on the top of the Per Theater Chart this week with Humpday opening in first place with an average of $14,369. The Beaches of Agnes was in second place with $13,584 in one theater during its second weekend of release. The overall box office leader, Brüno, was in third place with $11,110. Meanwhile, last week's per theater champ, The Hurt Locker, just managed to remain in the $10,000 club with $10,686, but it also expanded significantly, which makes this achievement even more impressive.

The best of the rest of the new releases was Weather Girl, which earned $5,772 in one theater. This is better than expected. The same can be said of Blood - The Last Vampire and its average of $5,501 in 20 theaters. Finally there's Soul Power, which earned $24,000 in 6 theaters for an average of $3,982.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Thanks to expansion and solid holds on the per theater chart, The Hurt Locker was able to reach $1 million over the weekend. This will not be its last milestone.
  • Moon made it to $1 million since last week and will have no trouble reaching $2 million by this time next week.
  • Whatever Works reached $2 million before the weekend and $3 million late in the weekend. It's per theater average is too low to expect another major expansion, but it still should reach $4 million soon and $5 million is quite likely.
