Weekend Estimates: Up Continues Pixar Tradition

Up has become the seventh Pixar out of nine to record a $50 million weekend, according to Disney's estimates released on Sunday. The new toon scored an estimated $68.2 million, which, if it holds up, will be the third-best opening for Pixar, behind The Incredibles ($70.5 million) and Finding Nemo ($70.3 million). (See complete box office history for Pixar movies.) With the summer just heating up, Disney can bank on having a $200 million hit on their hands.

Universal, meanwhile, will be very happy with the debut of Drag Me to Hell, which opened with an estimated $16.6 million. Although it declined steadily through the weekend, which is common for horror flicks, good reviews imply that word of mouth will keep it going for a few weeks to come.

Returning movies were generally hit by the comparison with last weeekend's holiday. Star Trek was strongest, with a 44% decline, while The Brothers Bloom expanded to 148 theaters and earned a decent $652,000. That's enough for it to have a shot at growing a little further.

In limited release, Oscar-winner Departures made a good start with $75,000 in ten theaters.
