International Box Office: Unstoppable, But for How Long?

November 17, 2010

Unstoppable opened in first place on the international box office over the weekend. (It has likely already fallen to Harry Potter on the daily chart, which opened on Wednesday.) Its opening weekend haul was $18.72 million on 4137 screens in 39 markets giving it a total opening of $19.31 million. It earned first place in Spain with $1.56 million on 336 screens, but was not as potent in South Korea or Germany earning third place with $1.33 million on 323 screens and $1.20 million on 504 respectively. It only managed fourth place in France, with $2.63 million on 430 screens, while it barely squeezed into the top five in Italy with $755,000 on 251.

Due Date was just a fraction behind with $18.22 million on 4006 screens in 37 markets for a two-week total of $46.62 million. It opened in third place in France with $3.14 million on 385 screens, which is good, but not great. On the other hand, it was down just 19% during its second weekend in the U.K. adding $3.05 million on 452 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.24 million after two. It was almost as strong in Germany down 28% to $2.62 million on 527 screens over the weekend and $7.14 million over two.

Skyline made its international debut with $10.67 million on 1849 screens in 7 markets over the weekend for a total opening of $10.95 million. It missed top spot in the U.K., but its opening of $1.94 million on 381 screens was enough for second place, while it placed third in Australia with $1.24 million on 181. On the other hand, it was a huge hit in Russia scoring first place with $5.28 million on 891 screens, easily taking top spot in the process.

Despicable Me fell to fourth place with $9.89 million on 3763 screens in 42 markets for a total of $270.82 million internationally and $519.63 million worldwide. Even without major markets left to open in, it should reach $300 million internationally before its run is over.

Jackass 3D held on relatively well, down to fifth place with $8.48 million on 1956 screens in 22 markets. It now has $31.84 million after three weeks of release. This is more than the combined international total for the previous films in the franchise, but well back of its domestic run, at least so far. Its best market so far is the U.K., where it added $1.70 million on 375 screens over the weekend and $6.43 million in total.

Saw VII 3D slipped a spot to seventh, with $7.94 million on 2021 screens in 31 markets for a total of $45.36 million after three weeks of release. It only managed fifth place in France with $2.51 million, but it was only playing on 181 screens, so that did give it an impressive per screen average for that market.

Potiche opened in first place in France with $6.25 million on 440 screens, while adding in a trio of smaller French-speaking markets. It opened in seventh place internationally with $7.50 million on 584 screens in 4 markets for a total of $8.08 million.

The Social Network remained in eighth place with $7.37 million on 2875 screens in 56 markets for a total of $76.83 million internationally and $164.64 million worldwide. In Italy it opened in third place with $1.11 million on 304 screens.

Red remained in ninth place with $6.15 million on 2643 screens, in 37 markets, for a total of $51.12 million after one month of release. Its biggest new market of the weekend was Brazil, where it opened in second place with $1.17 million on 198 screens over the weekend, for a total opening on $1.75 million. This is very solid opening for that market.

Little White Lies remained in tenth place internationally with $5.99 million on 668 screens in 3 markets over the weekend for a total of $40.04 million after four. Of that, $5.26 million was earned on 629 screens in France for a total of $35.30 million so far in its native market.

Golmaal 3 fell from fourth to eleventh, but it was down just 52%, which is actually a really good hold for an Indian movie. Over the weekend it made $5.75 million on 1123 screens in 17 markets for a total of $25.33 million after two.

Paranormal Activity 2 fell from fifth to twelfth with $5.41 million on 2614 screens, in 36 markets, for a total of $74.65 million. It saw its weekend haul sliced in half, so it will likely disappear quite quickly after this. Even so, it is already fantastically profitable, so the studio should be very happy.
