Weekend Estimates: MegaMind First as Three Movies Top $20 Million

MegaMind posted a solid $47.65 million to top the weekend chart, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. That's very much in line with the performance of other opening weekends for non-sequels from DreamWorks Animation. How to Train Your Dragon opened with $43.7 million earlier in the year; Monsters vs. Aliens posted $59.3 million in 2009, and fellow-November-opener Bee Movie scored $38 million back in 2007. Bee Movie ended up with $126 million in total in the US, and $150 million looks like the minimum benchmark for MegaMind as it looks forward to the lucrative holiday season.

Two other movies topped $20 million. Due Date picked up a very robust $33.5 million, according to Warner Bros., somewhat behind the $45 million enjoyed by The Hangover. For Colored Girls made $20.1 million, which is right down the middle for a Tyler Perry movie: The Family That Prays opened with $17.4 million, I Can Do Bad All By Myself opened with $23.4 million.

In limited release, 127 Hours was the star, with a massive $266,000 from just four theaters and an average of $66,000. Fair Game also enjoyed a strong opening, averaging $15,000 in 46 theaters.
