International Box Office: Holidays Help Despicable Return to Top
November 3, 2010
Thanks in part to holidays in France, Despicable Me was able to return to top spot with $21.65 million on 4511 screens in 44 markets for a total of $234.58 million internationally and $482.46 million worldwide. By this time next week, it will have more internationally than domestically and a total of more than half-a-billion worldwide. Its top market was France, where school holidays helped it more than double its take at $6.17 million on 657 screens, but that's for the 5-day weekend. Overall it has made $19.80 million in that market. It opened in second place in Japan with $2.93 million on 225 screens over the weekend and $3.12 million in total. It was flat in the U.K. adding another $4.15 million on 532 screens for a three week total of $24.21 million.
Paranormal Activity 2 slipped to second place with $15.11 million on 2894 screens in 27 markets for a total of $47.52 million. It opened in a handful of smaller markets, but its biggest numbers came from the U.K. where it placed third with $2.96 million on 393 screens over the weekend for a total of $13.33 million after two. The original made just over $16 million there and just under $89 million internationally, so this is a good sign for the film's chances to hit the century mark overseas.
Saw VII 3D opened in third place with $14.33 million on 1755 screens in 23 markets. Of this total, $5.78 million was earned on 382 screens in the U.K., which was enough for first place in that market. It had to settle for a distant second in Russia with $2.18 million on 411 screens.
The Social Network was right behind with $14.12 million on 2968 screens in 48 markets for a total of $51.20 million. It debuted in first place in Australia with $2.71 million on 285 screens, but it only managed fourth place in Russia with $1.66 million on 265. It fell to eighth place in France, but it still added $2.59 million on 380 screens over the weekend there for a total of $9.96 million after three.
Little White Lies remained in first place in its native France with $12.28 million 629 screens, while overall it remained in fifth place with $9.92 million on 668 screens in 3 markets. The reason for this seeming mathematical impossibility is that the French number is for five days while the overall number is for just three.
Red climbed to sixth place with $9.56 million on 1886 screens in 23 markets for a still early total of $28.63 million. It opened in second place in both Germany ($2.72 million on 514 screens) and in Australia ($1.73 million on 223). It also added $1.90 million on 413 screens over the weekend in the U.K. for a total of $6.97 million after two.
Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga'Hoole grew by 5%, but slipped to seventh place with $8.86 million on 4418 screens in 54 markets for a total of $66.25 million internationally. It opened in second place in South Korea, but with just $1.16 million on 296 screens over the weekend and $1.26 million in total. It only managed fifth place in France, but with $2.77 million on 467 screens over the 5-day weekend.
MegaMind opened in eighth place with $7.68 million on 787 screens. Of that, $9.94 million was earned on 691 screens in Russia, while the rest was earned in the Ukraine. In both markets it topped the charts.
SP: The Motion Picture opened in first place in Japan and ninth place overall, with $6.56 million on 394 screens. It had the best per screen average on the international top 30.
Arthur and the War of the Two Worlds climbed back into the top ten with $6.31 million on 867 screens in 6 markets for a total of $20.18 million. In France it made $7.97 million on 778 screens, but that was over five days.
Jackass 3D opened in 15th place with $4.61 million on 453 screens in 6 markets. It opened in first place in Germany with $2.75 million on 304 screens. In comparison, the first two films in the franchise both earned about $11 million, in total, internationally. By this time next week, it could have made more money internationally than the first two films did combined.
