International Box Office: Eat Pray is Loving Top Spot
October 13, 2010
Eat Pray Love rose to top spot on the international chart with $18.47 million on 4289 screens in 55 markets for a total of $64.81 million internationally. By this time next week, the film should have more revenue internationally than it had domestically, and it was a solid midlevel hit here. The film opened in first place in Australia with $3.42 million on 328 screens over the weekend and $3.63 million in total. On the other hand, it had to settle for fourth place in Russia with $1.74 million on 223 screens.
Despicable Me was close behind in second place with $17.82 million on 3584 screens in 33 markets for a total of $136.85 million internationally and $383.41 million worldwide. It opened in first place in France with $4.65 million on 655 screens and in Spain with $3.29 million on 364. Meanwhile in Germany, the film remained in top spot with $3.69 million on 690 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.61 million after two. The film should have little trouble getting to $400 million worldwide, and with openings in Italy, the U.K., and Japan coming up, $500 million is not out of the question.
Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga'Hoole saw growth reaching third place with $11.02 million on 3804 screens in 37 markets for a still early total of $25.56 million. It opened in Mexico in first place, but with a disappointing $1.38 million on 482 screens. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Brazil, but with a stronger $1.61 million on 223 screens.
Detective Dee: Mystery Of The Phantom Flame fell to fourth, but the Chinese film was still strong with $10.90 million on 1015 screens in 7 markets for a two-week total of $34.68 million. It is starting to spread throughout Asia, while I would be surprised if it doesn't garner at least a little interest from distributors here.
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps was relatively flat down just 1% to $10.76 million on 3426 screens in 59 markets for a total of $37.67 million. The film grabbed first place in the U.K. with $2.84 million on 444 screens, but it fell more than 50% during its second weekend in France with $1.04 million on 410 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.53 million.
Elite Squad 2 opened in first place in Brazil and sixth place overall with $8.32 million on 661 screens. In comparison, it took the original nearly a month to earn that much money. By this time next week, it should top its predecessor's final figure in its home market.
Resident Evil: Afterlife fell from second to seventh with $7.92 million on 3459 screens in 51 markets for a total of $197.73 million internationally and $256.60 million worldwide. No other film in the franchise had earned $100 million internationally or $150 million worldwide. In Japan is added $2.27 million on 591 screens over the weekend for a total of $51.15 million after a month of release. It remains on pace to top its domestic total in that market alone, or at least come very, very close. Something to keep an eye on.
Knight And Day returned to the international chart in eighth place with $7.23 million on 1002 screens in 2 markets for a total of $161.57 million internationally and $237.98 million worldwide. It had a strong opening in Japan placing second with $6.08 million on 589 screens, but it struggled in Italy with just $1.24 million on 374 screens, which was only enough for fourth place. This was an expensive movie to make and it wasn't exactly a big hit domestically, so its international success really saved the studio from losing a bundle.
Benvenuti Al Sud remained in first place in Italy while it rose to ninth place internationally with $6.86 million on 568 screens over the weekend for a total of $16.28 million after two. To put this into perspective, this is more than Inception has earned in that market, and by this time next week, it might top Shrek Forever After in that market.
Speaking of Inception, it slipped a spot to tenth with $6.74 million on 2585 screens in 44 markets for a total of $527.21 million internationally and 816.39 million worldwide. It is now just a hair behind Independence Day for 25th place on the all-time chart.
