Weekend Estimates: Social Network Reconnects with Audiences

Although three openers had at least a theoretical chance of topping the chart this weekend, it was The Social Network that took the honors, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
Its $15.5 million box office take was down about 31% from last weekend, which is a good performance in, well, these days of Facebook, and suggests that it could have a shot at $100 million in total.
Life as We Know It started well for Warner Bros., but had to settle for second place with an estimated $14.635 million as it lost steam over the weekend.
Secretariat never really had much steam and finished in third place for Disney with $12.6 million.
My Soul to Take was another horror dud, earning just $6.9 million for Universal.
Several returning movies had good weekends, with The Town, down 35%, The Owls of Ga'Hoole, down 36%, and Easy A, down 38%, all joining The Social Network in falling less than 40% from last weekend.
In limited release, It's Kind of a Funny Story made a disappointing entrance with $2 million from 742 theaters, for an anemic average of $2,700.
Waiting for Superman was much more impressive with $635,000 from 103 venues, keeping its average above $6,000 as it expanded.
The best-performing movie of the weekend was another politically-tinged documentary, Inside Job, which picked up $42,000 in just two theaters.
Nowhere Boy ($56,000 from four theaters) and Stone ($73,000 from six) also topped the $10,000 per theater average mark.
