Weekend Estimates: Expendables Beats Five Openers to Stay Top
August 22, 2010
Five openers with a decidedly end-of-Summer feel to them all posted so-so numbers this weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday morning, which left The Expendables as the weekend winner.
The ensemble action movie was down 53% in its second weekend to $16.5 million and has now earned a respectable $64.89 million.
Vampires Suck topped the openers with $12.2 million Friday to Sunday.
The spoof movie is projected to finish the weekend with $18.56 million since its opening on Wednesday.
Perhaps surprisingly, none of the openers has completely disastrous weekends.
Lottery Ticket earned a respectable $11.13 million from 1,973 theaters after a targeted ad campaign and release strategy.
Weinstein/Dimension is projecting $10.035 million for Piranha 3D, although our numbers suggest it'll more likely fall short of $10 million, barring a big improvement on Sunday.
Nanny McPhee Returns made a disappointing $8.3 million, although the movie has already had a successful international run and doesn't need a huge run in North America to be profitable.
Finally, Miramax's return to distribution with The Switch fell flat with an estimated $8.1 million.
In limited release, Oscilloscope's A Film Unfinished stood out with $37,500 in just four theaters.
