DVD Sales: Putting a Bounty on Top Spot
July 27, 2010
Sales numbers continued to be soft this week with none of the new releases doing strong business. We did have a new number of seller, as The Bounty Hunter opened with 560,000 units and $9.71 million in consumer spending at retail.
Our Family Wedding placed second with 201,000 units / $3.55 million in sales.
This is hardly a blockbuster start, but it struggled theatrically as well, so it was expected.
Percy & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief slipped a spot to third with 154,000 units / $3.08 million for the week and totals of 1.25 million units / $24.19 million in spending after three.
Brooklyn's Finest fell from first to fourth with 117,000 units for the week and 414,000 units after two, lifting its total sales of $6.49 million.
Hot Tub Time Machine was in a virtual tie for fourth place with 117,000 units, but its sales for the week were $2.33 million and its total sales were $14.39 million off of 748,000 units sold.
The only other new release to chart this week was Psych: The Complete Fourth Season, which placed 8th with 75,000 units, but was fourth in dollar terms with $2.61 million.
Blu-ray sales were even worse than last week down 14% to $11.0 million, which was just over 1% lower than last year, despite the new releases having more box office power than they did last year.
This was the worst weekly sales for the format since last September and the only good news is that DVD sales were down even more.
Compared to DVDs, Blu-ray represented 9.3% of the total market, which is the first time it has dipped below 10% since February, while it was 16% of the top twenty comparison.
The best-selling Blu-ray of the week was The Bounty Hunter with just over 80,000 units while second place went to Avatar with just under 50,000 units.
That's right, a Blu-ray that has been in stores for three months was the second-best-selling Blu-ray of the week.
Things will hopefully turn around when the summer blockbusters start coming out.
