Per Theater Chart is More Than All Right

July 13, 2010

The Kids are All Right stunned box office analysts by earning nearly $500,000 in a mere seven theaters for an average of $70,282. That's virtually unheard of. I still look at that number and think, "Typo". The only other confirmed entry in the $10,000 club was Despicable Me with an average of $16,225. I say confirmed member, because it is likely that The Girl Who Played with Fire also earned an average of $10,000 in the United States; however, its weekend numbers included a number of theaters in Canada, where it has been playing for more than six months.

There were only a few other new limited releases, starting with Winnebago Man, which earned an average of $8,235. The re-release of Grease, in sing-a-long format, opened with an average of $5,063 over the weekend, so I don't think it will become the next Rocky Horror Picture Show. [REC] 2 missed the Mendoza Line with an average of just $1,638, but it should find a more receptive audience on the home market. It would have made more sense to release the original in theaters and the sequel direct-to-DVD and not the other way around.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Mother and Child just made it to $1 million over the weekend and that's as far as it will go.
  • Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work just made it to $2 million over the weekend, but it should get to $3 million eventually.
  • I Am Love also just made it to $2 million and it should have no trouble getting to $3 million and beyond.
  • Winter's Bone topped $2 million before the weekend and it is already halfway to $3 million.
  • Solitary Man reached $3 million just before the weekend and it is already halfway to $4 million.
  • Cyrus surpassed $2 million before the weekend, $3 million over the weekend, and it should get to $4 million early this coming weekend.
