International Details: A-Team Earns a B-Grade
June 26, 2010
The top film on the international scene was published on Wednesday and can be found here.
The A-Team climbed to second place with $13.97 million on 4929 screens in 48 markets for a total of $34.74 million. New openings this past weekend include France, where it made $3.05 million on 621 screens. On the one hand, that was enough for first place. On the other hand, that's not a particularly strong start, especially for a summer blockbuster. It was only half has much as Prince of Persia opened with, for instance. In Italy it had a similar result with a first place, $1.11 million opening on 354 screens. That said, if it can earn half of what Prince of Persia does, then The A-Team will end its run with more than $100 million internationally and close to $200 million worldwide. As long as it is a hit on the home market, that will be enough to show a profit eventually, particularly if you take into account increased DVD sales for the TV series it is based on.
- Sex and the City 2 was very close behind, in third place with $13.71 million on 5997 screens in 59 markets for a total of $163.09 million internationally and $253.26 million worldwide. This milestone should be enough for the studio to declare victory, but its performance was well below expectations.
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remained potent with $11.30 million on 7571 screens in 45 markets for a total of $213.57 million internationally and $294.37 million worldwide. It will likely shed screens and markets at an accelerated pace. However, it is also likely that the film has already crossed $300 million worldwide, while it might make it to $250 million internationally.
- Shrek Forever After climbed into fifth place with $9.34 million on 1394 screens in 19 markets for a total of $85.61 million. In Australia it made $4.32 million on 471 screens over the weekend and $8.15 million including previews. This larger figure is about 30% less than the weekend opening of the previous Shrek film, but it is hard to compare the two numbers because of the difference in release strategies.
- Raavan became the latest international hit from India, earning sixth place with $8.08 million on 2190 screens in 24 markets.
- The Karate Kid remained relatively flat, down 10% to $5.74 million on 872 screens in 19 markets for a total of $14.93 million. It debuted in a number of smaller markets, while its next big test comes in two weeks when it opens in Australia.
- 71: Into the Fire opened in first place in South Korea and eighth internationally with $5.00 million on 761 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.90 million.
- Robin Hood sunk to ninth place with $4.85 million on 4780 screens in 53 markets for a total of $194.37 million internationally and $296.45 million worldwide. It has likely already crossed $300 million worldwide, while it should top $200 million internationally before too long. It will need strong numbers on the home market to show a profit any time soon, but it should get there eventually.
- Streetdance 3-D was down just 4% to $4.69 million on 1997 screens in 24 markets for a total of $36.82 million, of which $16.30 million has come from the U.K..
- Killers slipped a spot to 11th with $3.90 million on 1722 screens in 20 markets for a total of $11.29 million. It opened in first place in the U.K., but with only $1.57 million on 446 screens. This is equivalent to a $10 million opening here, so this is a matter of weak competition and not and real strength in the film itself.
- Confessions remained in top spot in Japan, climbing by 3% during its third weekend of release and earning $3.19 million on 266 screens for a total of $17.21 million.
- Fatal opened in 13th place with $2.56 million on 477 screens in 2 markets. Of that, $2.52 million came on 470 screens during its second place debut in France, while the rest came from Switzerland.
- Get Him To The Greek entered the chart for the first time during its run with $2.42 million on 373 screens in 5 markets for a very early total of $4.89 million. The vast majority of its weekend haul came from Australia, where it opened in second place with $2.11 million on 202 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.91 million.
- Masked Rider Den-O Trilogy: Episode Yellow opened in second place in Japan with $2.20 million on 267 screens.
- Shanghai opened in 16th place with $2.19 million on 385 screens in China. It doesn't have a solid release date here. However, if it does well internationally, there is a better chance it will be released here sooner rather than later.
- Iron Man 2 plummeted from seventh to 17th with $2.18 million on 2248 screens in 38 markets. This was still enough to push its total to $300.40 million internationally and $604.61 million worldwide. Both of these represent major milestones. The film has earned more than enough to show a profit.
- The Servant is showing incredible legs in South Korea, down just 14% to $2.17 million on 401 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.19 million after three.
- Rajneeti had the worst week-to-week decline on the chart, plummeting 59%. However, it still added $2.10 million on 687 screens in 13 markets for a total of $24.60 million. This is much better than most Indian films earn.
