International Top Five: Titan Towers Above Competition

April 14, 2010

Clash of the Titans nearly doubled its reach over the weekend as it remained in top spot with $53.87 million on 6629 screens in 32 markets for a still early total of $120.95 million internationally and $231.18 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in Russia with $11.82 million on 920 screens. That's a lot given the size of the market, but Russia has a history of rewarding fantasy films. In France it also opened in first place, earning $6.41 million on 576 screens, while in Germany it showed similar strength with $5.93 million on 628 screens. As far as holdovers were concerned, it remained in first place in South Korea with $4.11 million on 642 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.17 million after two. It also remained on top in the U.K. with $3.77 million on 468 screens over the weekend for a total of $19.56 million after two.

How To Train Your Dragon remained in second place, again, adding $26.34 million on 7202 screens in 53 markets for a total of $150.90 million internationally and $284.30 million worldwide. It was almost entirely relying on holdovers this weekend, but that didn't hurt the film too much. In fact, it grew by 43% in Australia to take the top spot with $3.30 million on 361 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.54 million after three. It has yet to open in South Korea and Japan, and it will have little trouble getting to $200 million internationally even without those two major markets.

Alice in Wonderland held onto third place with $18.44 million on 6687 screens in 48 markets for a total of $461.07 million internationally and $780.08 million worldwide. With openings in Spain and Japan this weekend, it should see growth over the weekend, which could help it reach $500 million internationally. It will have no trouble topping $800 million worldwide sometime over the weekend.

Shutter Island returned to the top five with $7.63 million on 2918 screens in 45 markets for a total of $147.28 million internationally and $272.29 million worldwide. The film topped the chart in Japan, opening with $2.93 million on 442 screens over the weekend. This strongly suggests that the film will reach $300 million worldwide, which would be the first Martin Scorsese film to reach that mark.

The Bounty Hunter slipped a spot to fifth with $7.37 million on 2570 screens in 44 markets for a total of $42.33 million internationally. It has nearly reached $100 million worldwide. It managed second place in Spain with $1.58 million on 344 screens, but it was decidedly weaker in Italy, barely landing in the top five with $830,000 on 251 screens. The film has yet to open in a number of major markets, including France, South Korea, Brazil, and Japan. When it is finished, it will likely have earned enough to be considered a solid midlevel hit.
