International Top Five: Alice is a Worldwide Wonderland

March 10, 2010

As it did domestically, Alice in Wonderland opened in first place internationally with $95.27 million on 6389 screens in 41 markets over the weekend for a total opening of $100.52 million. This is a little lower that its domestic debut, but it has yet to open in about a third of the international markets, so if it can open with similar strength in those place, the film should have about a 60 / 40 international/ domestic split. This means that even if the film has poor legs, it should have no trouble topping $500 million globally. The film's biggest single market was the U.K., where it opened in first place with $16.04 million on 533 screens for a per screen average of just over $30,000. It was surprisingly strong in Italy, where it made $11.15 million on 668 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.37 million. It nearly cracked $10 million in its opening in Australia, pulling in $9.46 million on 48 screens. Other major markets include Mexico ($7.92 million on 780 screens), Germany ($7.12 million on 452), South Korea ($4.69 million on 440), and Russia ($4.11 million on 868).

After eleven weeks on top, Avatar was finally pushed into second place. It still managed to add $22.87 million on 5447 screens in 69 markets for a total of $1.88 billion internationally and $2.61 billion worldwide. The next major milestone for the film is $2 billion internationally. It could also still reach the century mark in Australia, Spain, and Italy. It has probably made it there in Australia already, as it finished the weekend with $99.91 million. In Spain it made $1.83 million on 280 screens over the weekend for a total of $97.14 million. On the other hand, the loss of the 3D screens in Italy hurt and it only managed $1.09 million on 184 screens over the weekend for a total of $86.79 million after eight weeks of release.

Shutter Island expanded over the weekend, helping it remain in third place with $18.21 million on 3145 screens in 25 markets for a total of $60.97 million after three weeks of release. It opened in third place in Italy with $2.65 million on 433 screens and it remained in first place in France with $4.98 million on 500 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.44 million after two. It is also doing well in Germany, with $2.64 million on 473 screens over the weekend and $7.76 million after two, as well as in Spain with $1.50 million on 402 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.33 million after three. It placed third in both markets.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief saw its weekend haul slashed in half thanks to the competition from Alice in Wonderland, but it was able to cross the $100 million milestone before that happened. Over the weekend it pulled in $9.40 million on 5544 screens in 66 markets for a total of $110.06 million. It fell 39% in Japan, which is higher than average for that market, pulling in $2.05 million on 561 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.71 million after two.

Doraemon The Movie: Nobita's Mermaid Legend opened in first place in Japan and fifth place internationally with $6.13 million on 366 screens. This gave the film the best per screen average in the top 30 at $16,754.
