DVD Sales: Harry Potter Stays Ahead of Duo of DVD Debuts
November 30, 2011
New releases this week were a little strange. While there were two massive releases, both were in fact released on Blu-ray a month ago. The weak new releases helped Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 lead the way on the DVD sales chart selling 2.38 million units, while generating $35.57 million in revenue. After just two weeks of release, the film has sold 5.21 million units and generated $77.79 million in revenue, placing it third for the year.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opened in second place with 554,000 units / $11.08 million. This would have been terrible, except that it has sold 2.5 million Blu-rays since its initial release on the home market. Likewise, The Lion King sold 537,000 units / $10.20 million on DVD this week, but it has been on Blu-ray for weeks selling 2.8 million copies. Cars 2 is still going strong with 425,000 units / $6.69 million for the week and 3.07 million units / $48.39 million after three. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 again saw growth this week selling 328,000 units / $1.31 million, giving it a total of 6.42 million units / $82.73 million, making it the best selling DVD of the year. It likely won't stay there long before Part 2 overtakes it.
Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury placed tenth with 152,000 units / $2.28 million, which is impressive for this type of release. On the other hand, Larry Crowne only managed 12th place with 142,000 units / $2.35 million. Its box office run was disappointing, and it is doing no better on the home market.
One last note, we get two rounds of data for home market sales. The first round includes some estimates that are adjusted by the second round. Normally these adjustments are quite small, but that wasn't the case this week. Worse still, the sales numbers were adjusted downward, by about 20%, which just continues the sea of bad news for DVD. (Blu-ray sales were also down, but they've shown so much growth year-over-year that this is just a minor hiccup.)
