DVD Sales: Honeymoon Begins for Bridesmaids
October 5, 2011
New releases were again dominated by TV on DVD releases representing five of the eight new DVDs to reach the top 30 on this week's DVD sales chart. However, none of them reached the top five. The best of these new releases was Bridesmaids with 1.37 million units / $21.44 million in opening week sales.
Spooky Buddies debuted in second place with 366,000 units / $5.94 million. This is good for a direct-to-DVD release, but well behind the previous installment in the franchise. Thor fell to third place with 165,000 units / $2.64 million for totals of 826,000 units / $14.48 million. Unfortunately, it was adjusted downward after revised numbers were released and its DVD sales have been disappointing, but at least it is stronger on Blu-ray. The latest DVD release for Dumbo placed fourth with 131,000 units / $2.35 million. This is pretty good for a catalog title and it did even better on Blu-ray. X-Men: First Class rounded out the top five with 107,000 units / $2.02 million over the week and 1.04 million / $18.53 million after three.
The best of the rest of the new releases were led by Modern Family: Season Two with 97,000 units while its revenue of $2.91 million was enough for third place for the week. Castle: Season Two debuted in eighth place with 75,000 units / $2.41 million. The Mentalist: Season Three opened in 15th place with 30,000 units / $1.14 million while The Kennedys mini-series sold 30,000 units as well, but only generated $536,000. The final new release to chart was Hawaii Five-O: Season One opened in 21st place with 25,000 units / $935,000.
