International Box Office: Smurfs Lead Soft, Soft Box Office

September 28, 2011

The Smurfs were the only film to top $10 million on the international chart this past weekend earning $12.61 million on 5,931 screens in 61 markets. This lifted its totals to $364.47 million internationally and $502.83 million worldwide after two months of release. The film has no major markets left to open in, but it remained in first place in Italy with $3.03 million on 559 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.26 million after two. It also remained in top spot in Australia with $2.55 million on 458 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.97 million after two.

Friends with Benefits climbed another spot into second place with $9.49 million on 2,970 screens in 44 markets for a total of $55.48 million after two months of release. Its biggest opening came in Spain where it made $1.88 million on 353 screens, which was enough to finish first in that market. It has yet to open in Brazil, Italy, Japan, and several smaller markets, and while it won't be a blockbuster hit, it's a solid midlevel hit and the studio should recoup its investment shortly.

Johnny English: Reborn slipped a spot to third with $8.11 million on 1749 screens in 19 markets for a total of $24.26 million after just two weeks of release. The film expanded into a number of smaller markets, but most of its revenue came from holdovers. These includes Australia where it was down just 21% to $1.94 million on 289 screens, giving it a total of $5.32 million after just two weeks of release. At this pace, it will blow past the $7.6 million the original made in that market.

Mausam opened in fourth place with $7.81 million on 1904 screens in 17 markets. This is strong for an Indian film, but it's not a blockbuster.

Final Destination 5 climbed into fifth place with $6.7 million on 2,942 screens in 53 markets for a total of $99.0 million. It has likely already crossed $100 million internationally and is the second biggest installment in the franchise.

Abduction opened in sixth place with $6.37 million on just 887 screens in 20 markets, which is a relatively better start than it managed here. It earned first place in Brazil with $1.67 million on 350 screens and third place in Russia with $1.18 million on 557 screens. It is way too early to tell where it will end up, but it will almost certainly make more internationally than domestically.
