DVD Sales: Tangled Straightens Out the Competition
April 11, 2011
It was an awesome week for new releases on the sales chart, or should that be "new release". While there were five new releases to chart, one of them, Tangled, dominated selling 3.46 million units while generating $51.92 million in sales. It is already the biggest selling DVD of 2011.
Black Swan was a distant second with 632,000 units / $9.48 million. This would normally be great for a limited release, but not for an Oscar winning limited release that earned more than $100 million at the box office. Megamind climbed into third place with 175,000 units sold for the week and now has running tallies of 2.69 million units and $37.56 million after six weeks of release. Yogi Bear fell from first to fourth with 170,000 units / $2.54 million for the week and 834,000 units / $12.50 million after two. Mad Men: Season Four opened in fifth place with 140,000 units, but thanks to TV on DVD pricing, it was third in terms of dollars with $3.92 million.
Fair*Game debuted in ninth place with 87,000 units / $1.31 million, which is inline with its theatrical run. Evangelion: 2.22 You Can [Not] Advance opened in 22nd place with 42,000 units / $419,000, which is impressive for a niche market film like this.
Tangled was just as dominate on the Blu-ray chart, selling close to 1.7 million units. I was expecting the film to do well on High Definition, but not this well. Black Swan was well back in second place with 330,000 units, which means it had a nearly identical Blu-ray market share as Tangled did. No other Blu-rays came close to the top two with Bambi placing third with 60,000 units sold. Mad Men: Season Four and The Ten Commandments opened in fourth and fifth places respectively, both with just over 40,000 units.
Other new releases to chart include Evangelion: 2.22 You Can [Not] Advance at just over 30,000 units and Fair*Game at just over 20,000 units.
