International Box Office: Tangled Web of Confusion
January 12, 2011
We are again stuck with studio estimates, which is a bit troubling, as I was hoping the schedule would have returned to normal. Also, this has resulted in a bit of confusion with Tangled and The Tourist finishing in a very close race for the number one position. Tangled led the way according to the studio estimate with $26.3 million on 3,636 screens in 43 markets for a total of $179.3 million internationally and $355.1 million worldwide. This week it debuted in first place in Australia with $5.74 million on 462 screens over the weekend, for a total opening of $6.08 million. Meanwhile in Brazil it topped the charts with $4.53 million on 446 screens over the weekend and $5.98 million in total. In both cases the film opened better than it did here.
The Tourist was right behind with $26.2 million on 5000 screens in 61 markets for a total of $100.5 million. In Russia, it had to settle for second place, but still opened with an impressive $6.20 million on 654 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.79 million.
Gulliver’s Travels debuted in top spot in Russia with $6.45 million on 964 screens over the weekend and $11.24 million in total. Overall it made $20.9 million on 5130 screens in 39 markets for a still relatively early total of $81.2 million. On the other hand, it will need to double its current running tally to have any hope of earning a profit any time soon.
Little Fockers opened in a series of smaller markets, which helped push its total to $110 million, including $20 million on 4848 screens in 50 markets this past weekend.
The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader cracked $200 million internationally with $17.8 million on 7558 screens in 69 markets for a total fo $244.3 million. This total is more than double what it will finish with here, but it could be enough to salvage a profit, sooner rather than later,
Tron: Legacy was right behind with $17.6 million on 5000 screens in 43 markets. This should make enough to show profit, sooner or later, but not enough to earn a sequel.
Finally we get to some updates for last week, and there were some important changes. For instance, Let The Bullets Fly actually finished in first place with $25.16 million on 675 screens in China over the weekend for a total of $81.57 million. If You Are The One 2 fell from first to seventh, but still added an incredible $17.43 million on 710 screens over the weekend for a total of $54.38 million after two.
