DVD Sales: Resident Finds Plenty of Homes
January 11, 2011
Only two new releases charted this week, and only one of them could lay claim to top spot. That DVD was Resident Evil: Afterlife, which sold 576,000 units and generated $9.86 million in opening week sales. On the other hand, Despicable Me could also legitimately claim first place with $9.98 million in revenue from 565,000 units. So far that film has sold 5.73 million DVDs for $96.82 million in total sales.
Inception remained in third place with 518,000 units / $6.94 million over the week for totals of 3.47 million units / $60.51 million after a month. Salt rose a spot to fourth with 416,000 units / $6.66 million over the week for totals of 1.06 million units / $16.94 million after two. The Town returned to the top five with 375,000 units / $4.87 million for the week and 1.25 million units / $19.79 million after three.
The only other new release to chart was The American, which placed 15th with 209,000 units / $3.13 million.
Blu-ray sales came crashing down this week, but that happens every year at this time. They were down more than 50% from last week to $51.2 million, but that was still nearly 43% higher than the same weekend last year. Meanwhile, it represented 22% of total sales, which is a very impressive market share.
Inception remained the best-selling Blu-ray of the week with just over 470,000 units, while Resident Evil: Afterlife placed second with just under 470,000 units. Meanwhile, The A-Team placed third with close to 450,000 units, which was significantly more than it sold on DVD this week.
