DVD Sales: Chihuahua Towers Over Competition
October 2, 2012
Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3 led the contingent of new releases earning first place on the DVD sales chart this week. It opened with 292,000 units / $4.96 million, which is excellent for a direct-to-DVD release.
Snow White and the Huntsman was pushed into second place with 242,000 units / $4.84 million for the week and 995,000 units / $17.63 million after two. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was close behind in third place with 238,000 units / $3.56 million. That's excellent compared to the average limited release, but then again, this was no average limited release. The Cabin in the Woods only managed fourth place with 194,000 units / $2.91 million during its first week of sales; however, it did do better on Blu-ray. Barbie: The Princess and The Popstar remained in the top five with 181,000 units / $2.35 million for the week and 575,000 units / $7.47 million after two. This is better than a lot of first-run releases manage.
Supernatural: The Complete Seventh Season just missed the top five with 154,000 units / $4.61 million. Katy Perry: Part of Me only managed ninth place with 109,000 units / $1.42 million for the week. It was disappointing at the box office and so far it is disappointing on the home market. Modern Family: Season Three earned tenth place with 102,000 units / $2.55 million. This is a strong opening for a TV on DVD release. Katt Williams: Kattpacalypse was the final new release to chart earning 58,000 units / $750,000. Most stand-up concert DVD releases never chart, so this is a good result.
