International Box Office: Evil Triumphs
September 26, 2012
Resident Evil: Retribution remained in first place on the international chart with $29.83 million on 7,250 screens in 73 markets for a total of $103 million internationally. It is already the second best in the franchise internationally and while it might not become the number one film, it has made enough to ensure another installment. The film opened in first place in Germany with $3.40 million on 475 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.74 million, while it also topped the chart in Mexico with $3.55 million on 1,218. Its best market of the weekend was Japan, where it added $6.35 million on 775 screens over the weekend for a total of $28.23 million after just two weeks of release.
The Expendables 2 reached $200 million internationally this weekend; normally I would have said this would be enough to ensure another installment in the franchise, except we already knew that was happening. The film made $12.43 million on 5,322 screens in 42 markets for totals of $202.67 million internationally and $285.69 million worldwide. This is more than the original made in total, and it has yet to open in Japan. When it does, it should have more than $300 million worldwide, which is enough to reach a profit before the home market.
Ted rose to third place with $9.4 million on 2,731 screens in 44 markets for totals of $202.89 million internationally and $420.73 million worldwide. The film opened in second place in Brazil with $1.25 million on 263 screens, which is an okay start. R-rated comedies rarely do as well internationally as they do domestically, because comedy is harder to translate than big explosions. This film isn't quite there yet, but unless it bombs in France and Italy, it will get there.
White Deer Plain opened in China with $8.9 million, which was enough for fourth place on the international chart. However, that's all the information we have.
The Bourne Legacy slipped a spot to fifth with $8.7 million on 3,566 screens in 52 markets for an international total of $102.59 million. Getting to $100 million is enough to save face, but if I were a movie executive, I wouldn't want to risk greenlighting another installment in the franchise. The film topped the chart in France with $3.28 million on 580 screens, which is good, but not great.
Masquerade saw its weekend haul rise 7% to $7.95 million on 922 screens over the weekend. This was enough to remain in first place in South Korea, while it rose to sixth place internationally. After two weeks of release, the film has earned $21.09 million.
Heroine didn't connect in North America, but internationally it landed in seventh place with $6.49 million. This is good for an Indian film, but not spectacular.
Bayside Shakedown 4: The Final remained in second place in Japan while it fell to eighth place internationally with $5.72 million on 452 screens over the weekend. After three weeks of release, it has amassed $46.98 million in its native market.
Brave was right being with $5.7 million in 55 markets for totals of $274.4 million internationally and $507.8 million worldwide. It became the ninth Pixar film to reach $500 million mark on the worldwide box office.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted remained in tenth place with $5.07 million on 1,982 screens in 38 marekst for a total of $412.44 million internationally and $628.33 million worldwide. It remained in first place in Australia with $2.70 million on 532 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.10 million after two.
