Weekend Estimates: Bourne and Campaign Knock Out Batman
August 12, 2012
After another lengthy run for the country's number one film, we will have a new top movie this weekend thanks to a strong debut for The Bourne Legacy, which will beat The Dark Knight Rises after Batman spent three weekends atop the chart. Universal is predicting that their franchise reboot will pick up about $40.3 million this weekend, somewhat behind The Bourne Legacy's $69.2 million debut, but very creditable for movie that takes the franchise in a new direction. Even better for the overall market, The Campaign is predicted to post $27.4 million for Warner Bros., which will be enough for second place.
Less impressive was the debut of Hope Springs, which Sony is expecting to generate about $15.6 million over the three day weekend for a shade over $20 million after five days. The film should have decent legs, assuming it holds on to theaters over the next few weeks, but has a long way to go before it makes back even its P&A budget.
The weekend's other notable move in the top ten is downwards, and also involves Sony: Total Recall is projected to fall 68% to $8.1 million in its second weekend.
In limited release, Red Hook Summer and 2 Days in New York are both set for $10,000-plus per theater averages after opening in New York. 2016: Obama's America and Killer Joe are continuing to deliver good business as they slowly expand. Rocky Mountain Pictures is projecting $320,000 for the former in 61 theaters, while LD Distribution has the latter pegged at $146,000 in 36 venues.
