Weekend Estimates: Dark Knight Recalled for Third Weekend
August 5, 2012
The Dark Knight Rises will become the third film this year to top the weekend box office chart for three weeks running, thanks in part to another reasonably strong weekend (down 41% from last time), but mainly because Total Recall will muster only a decidedly so-so $26 million on debut, according to Sony's Sunday estimate. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days is expected to pull in about $14.7 million for Fox, rounding out another weekend where new movies have failed to catch on with audiences.
A couple of films will cross significant milestones this weekend. Ted is set to top $200 million, which is a huge haul for an R-rated comedy. The Amazing Spider-Man is going to make it past $250 million -- the fourth film to do so this year, after The Dark Knight Rises, The Hunger Games and the year's certified champ, The Avengers.
In limited release, Celeste and Jesse Forever will post around $112,000 in its opening weekend for Sony Classics, for a per theater average of $28,000. Killer Joe will earn about $163,000 in 14 theaters for an average of about $11,600 for LD Distribution. Beasts of the Southern Wild seems to be running out of steam, as it is projected to pick up $1.175 million from 318 theaters, for an average of $3,695 -- most likely not enough to support much further expansion.
